The Race to the Throne
The Race for the Throne is the first-ever L5R "mega-game." You will determine the major shifts of the Empire - not through the CCG tournaments alone, but through many other means. These can include costuming, web-design, charity fund-raising, hosting large events, spreading the word of your Clan, etc. This game will begin with the Kotei season, and the whole Race for the Throne will lead to the Samurai Championships in 2008.

Object of the Game
Each Clan is trying to seize the throne and rule Rokugan. To do so, the Clans must achieve dominance in five Spheres of power: Military, Economy, Politics, Knowledge, and Spirit. During the course of the megagame, the clans accumulate points in each Sphere, and are ranked in the Sphere based on point totals compared to other clans. The Clan at the end with the best combined rankings (adding all five Spheres together for each Clan) will take the throne at the end of The Samurai Championships.

Participating Clans
Crab, Crane, Dragon, Lion, Mantis, Phoenix, Scorpion, Spider, and Unicorn.

The Prize of Power
At the end of the megagame, the Clan with the highest rankings in each Sphere will place a member to the following positions:

Military: Shogun
Economy: Imperial Treasurer
Politics: Imperial Chancellor
Knowledge: Imperial Advisor
Spirit: Voice of the Emperor
All Spheres Combined: Emperor

The Seven Legs
There will be seven legs of the race. At the end of each leg we will calculate to see who is leading in each category. There will be prizes for each leg's best Clan in the different Spheres.

It is important to win the legs because the top Clan in each Sphere of a given leg will receive a point bonus during the next leg in that Sphere.

If a Clan is dominant in at least three Spheres at the end of any given leg, they will put a Clan member up as the leading contender for the throne, giving them a large advantage over other Clans not currently in power. The actual Emperor will be decided at the Samurai Championships. If a Clan has the leading contender (3 Spheres or better) at the end of a leg they will gain an additional point bonus for all spheres during the next leg.

1st Leg Preseason: Kotei 2007, March - May
2nd Leg: June 1, 2007 - September 30, 2007
3rd Leg: October 1, 2007 - December 31, 2007
4th Leg: January 1, 2008 - March 31, 2008
5th Leg: April 1, 2008 - June 30, 2008
6th Leg: July 1, 2008 - Just before Samurai Championships
7th Leg: Samurai Championships

Temptations
Any time a Clan either tops a specific Sphere two or more legs in a row or tops two or more Spheres in a single leg, members of the Imperial Assembly registered to that Clan will have a chance to accept or refuse a temptation by popular vote from those registered to that Clan. An example of such could be a box of boosters sent to all members of the Clan, or special promo cards which only registered members of that Clan will receive. Whatever form it takes, the price for accepting is always the same: the Clan will only receive half the points in its top-ranked Sphere during the next leg, and loses any additional bonuses in other Spheres for that leg.

Earning Points

Military
Your victories at CCG events translate to victory for your Clan on the field of battle in Rokugan.

Scheduled Major Events

These will be on the schedule on the AEG web site. These events include Kotei, Gencon Indy, European Championships, Jewel Championships, etc.

Sanctioned Samurai Fund Events
AEG will make a Samurai Fund Prize Kit and sanctioning available to T.O.'s starting in June 2007. No events will be sanctioned prior due to Kotei. Events must purchase the Samurai Fund Prize Kit and have a minimum of 50 participants for the event in order for it to count for points in the Race. Proceeds from the sale of the Samurai Fund Prize Kit go to the Samurai Fund. T.O.'s and players will be given the opportunity to host events that will allow the winner to qualify for a spot at the Samurai Championships. Details on how to organize these events to follow.

Economy
Your use of Koku will help your Clan dominate the markets and trade routes of Rokugan.

Scheduled Events
These will include: Koku Auctions, Largest Kotei, Best Samurai Fund Promotion, Store Makeover Contest, etc.

Koku Redemption
Points will be earned during each leg for koku sent and redeemed at the AEG offices. All koku sent to the AEG offices after January 1 can be pledged to a specific Clan. Points will be awarded to the Clan that sends in the largest total amount of koku and for the single largest koku purchase. Keep an eye on the AEG site for special Race for the Throne koku offers.

Politics
How you present yourself in words, attire, and character will sway the courts of Rokugan in your Clan's favor.

Scheduled Events
These will include: Winter Court, Secret Votes, Best Kotei Vote, L5R Attire Contests, Clan Courts, Fan Site Contests, etc.

Court Intrigue
Players will have the ability to earn regular points through RPG events and through long-term in-game loyalty to a specific Clan.

Knowledge
Your knowledge of the traditions, lore, and history of L5R will give your Clan control over secrets, spells, and other information in Rokugan.

Scheduled Events
These will include a L5R Scavenger Hunt, L5R Biggest Fan Contest, Fan Fiction Contest, Hidden questions on the web, etc.

Walking the Way
Points will be earned for each leg through regular trivia quizzes and Imperial Assembly contests.

Spirit
Your generosity and sportsmanship will win the hearts and minds of the people of Rokugan.

Scheduled Events
These will include Charity Events, Food Drives, Challenge Booths, and more.

Imperial Gift
Players and Clans will be able to gain points in the Spirit Sphere for food and charitable donations made in the name of their Clan and verified by the charity receiving the donation.

Race for the Throne: This event will be worth 30 military points for first place, 15 points for second, 10 points for third and 5 points for first. An additional booster draft will be held, which will be worth 10 military points for first place and 5 points for second.
Gencon Indy, Gencon Australia, the European Championship and the South American Championship are each host to the Samurai Championship Tournament. While each location will have special events, multiple tournaments and activities, the first rounds of the Samurai Championship Tournament will be represented in the main event at each location. 32 players will move on to the finals to be held in Southern California in November of 2008.

The winning clan of this tournament will receive two prizes. First, the winning clan will be immune to elimination in the Race for the Throne; in the case that they would be eliminated, elimination would fall to the second most eligible clan. Secondly, the winning clan will take for its own the lands of the clan that is eliminated, serving as governors for the uninhabited lands.
In addition, the champion of the clan that wins the side event will win a duel to the first blood against the champion of the clan that places second.

Race to the Throne: This event will result in points given for the following contests. For every three wins a clan gets in each category, they will get one point in that sphere.

Spirit: T-shirt Dominance - Clan with the most Clan T-shirts on at each event.

Knowledge: Most Demos - Clan who gives the most demonstrations of L5R with non-L5R players in the store that day.

Politics: Best Decorated Store - The Clan that best helps decorate their store in all things their Clan.

Economy: Booster Draft Event - Stores will be able to run a booster draft event and winners will earn Economy points.

The greatest heroes of the Empire have gathered in the tournament grounds near the Plains of Thunder, assembled by the announcement of a grand Celestial Tournament by the Voices of the Sun and Moon. Dozens have assembled to compete, watched and supported by hundreds of their kinsmen, including the most important and powerful individuals anywhere in the Emerald Empire.

This has not gone unnoticed.

The forces of Heaven wish to re-establish a proper, reverent order in the world of man, but the forces of the Realm of Evil do not consider such an outcome acceptable. The forces of Jigoku have thrived for decades in the atmosphere of fear and ambition that mankind has wrought, and they have no intention of allowing that to stop.

The Clan that claims the most victories in this Global Storyline Tournament will be responsible for thwarting an attack by Jigoku on the Celestial Tournament, the pivotal event in determining the next Dynasty of the Emerald Empire. The cost of victory may be great indeed, but the clan will gain a favor from their new Emperor, and the blessings of the Voices of the Sun and Moon will be showered upon them as well.

Race to the Throne: This event will be worth 4 military points for first place, 2 for second and 1 each for third and fourth. Additional points in each of the other spheres will be awarded, 3 points for first place and 1 for second.

The Empire is in turmoil in the face of disapproval from the Celestial Heavens. Mankind has lost his way, and presumed too much, meddling in affairs that are not for those without the spark of divinity within their soul. The precious few virtuous among them are to be rewarded, and the countless legions of the sinful are to be punished. There will be no mercy, for the wrath of the Heavens has been fully aroused.

Not all share this animosity, however.

From the murky depths of the Realm of Waiting, the god named Ryoshun watches with sadness. Alone among the sons and daughters of the original Lady Sun and Lord Moon, Ryoshun has no legacy in the mortal world, no descendants or followers to bear his name and celebrate his memory. For a thousand years he has watched the world of men without bias, without partiality, and he has seen the virtue that others have missed in their anger and bitterness.

Now the Guardian of the Spirit Realms has reached into the essence of each realm under his protection, and crafted a series of artifacts of incredible power, each the equal or better of the ancestral weapons held by the Great Clans. These incredible talismans of power will be gifted to those who demonstrate their worth, as a sign to the Heavens that the divine can inspire as well as censure.

The winner this tournament will determine the clan that receives the Talisman of Tengoku. The mark of the Celestial Heavens carries great weight, and none may attack its bearer whom he has not first attacked. The winner may choose what form the Talisman takes (a weapon, a suit of armor, an item of jewelry, or any other appropriate token that the winner prefers), and what non-experienced, non-unique Samurai-legal personality will be chosen to bear it.

Race to the Throne: This event will be worth 4 military points for first place, 2 for second and 1 each for third and fourth. Additional points in each of the other spheres will be awarded, 3 points for first place and 1 for second.

Years ago, a man named Kaneka traveled the Empire as a ronin, encountering many talented and gifted individuals, making allies and enemies everywhere he went. When the hand of fate intervened and granted Kaneka a life unlike that of any ronin-born samurai, when he rose in status and power to become the first Shogun of Rokugan for his brother, Emperor Toturi III, those who had known him best stood beside him as his chosen advisors. These men and women were placed above all others in the Shogun?s forces, and when many of the Great Clans showed their support of Kaneka, he in turn ordered his advisors to swear fealty to the clans as a sign of his favor. One by one, his advisors joined the ranks of the Great and Minor Clans.

All save one.

Etsushi is the last true descendant of the ronin hero Ihariko, who founded the Hidden Sword ronin band. The Forest Killer bandits destroyed the Hidden Sword years ago, leaving only Etsushi, his brother Uchito, and Kaneka alive to tell the tale. Now Kaneka is dead, Uchito has joined the Lion at the Shogun's request, and Etsushi alone remains. As a magistrate in Zakyo Toshi, the so-called City of Vice, Etsushi has had to face the machinations of the Scorpion again and again, and now he finally has accepted that as a ronin there is nothing he can do as a simple wave man. Fortunately, his talents, his courage, and his tenacity have not gone unnoticed, and a clan has approached him with the offer of fealty that he alone among the advisors missed originally.

What clan will Etsushi serve?
Will he join his brother among the Lion?
Will he accept that the Scorpion cannot be defeated, and join the Clan of Secrets?
That remains to be seen.

The winner of this tournament will see his clan offer fealty to the ronin hero Etsushi, the last of the legendary Shogun's Advisors. Etsushi will swear an oath of loyalty and serve the clan with every resource at his disposal, no matter the cost. Although there is no guarantee of a new personality card, if one should be printed, the winner will receive full credit for Etsushi's new representation in the game.

The winner may choose what form the Talisman takes (a weapon, a suit of armor, an item of jewelry, or any other appropriate token that the winner prefers), and what non-experienced, non-unique Samurai-legal personality will be chosen to bear it.

Story Point: Hida Ubogin will gain the Talisman of Meido in mempo form.

The winner this tournament will determine the clan that receives the Talisman of Meido. The Realm of Waiting offers eternal patience and persistence to those who bear its mark. The bearer of this talisman will never age or grow infirm so long as he keeps it in his possession. The winner may choose what form the Talisman takes (a weapon, a suit of armor, an item of jewelry, or any other appropriate token that the winner prefers), and what non-experienced, non-unique Samurai-legal personality will be chosen to bear it.

become the Emperor's favored courtier.

Race to the Throne: This event will be worth 4 military points for first place, 2 for second and 1 each for third and fourth. Additional points in each of the other spheres will be awarded, 3 points for first place and 1 for second.

Each court season is an opportunity for those who travel in such circles to increase their influence and prestige and, for a very select few, to gain the attention and the favor of the Emperor himself. With a new Dynasty upon the throne, the new Emperor's first Winter Court will be the most momentous in living memory, and opportunities will abound for those who know how to seek them out.

The winner of this tournament will have the opportunity to create a new character in the Legend of the Five Rings storyline. This character will be in attendance at the new Emperor's Winter Court, although they may be a courtier, a yojimbo, an artisan, or any of a dozen other possible professions. This character will gain the attention of the Emperor through one means or another, perhaps creating a new work of art, demonstrating a mastery of kata, or skillful maneuvers in court. For at least a season, this new character will be the darling of the court, the favored of the Emperor himself, and will feature prominently in any fiction regarding the courts.

Story Point: Moto Kang will perform an act of villainy
and awaken the spirit of his blade.

Race to the Throne: This event will be worth 4 military points for first place, 2 for second and 1 each for third and fourth. Additional points in each of the other spheres will be awarded, 3 points for first place and 1 for second.

Every samurai carries a blade forged for his family. The eldest in each particular branch of a family carries his grandfather's blade, and in turn passes it down when he comes of age to do so. Every katana has a story, and is forged for service. Those who come into the hands of particularly valiant warriors can have their spirits awakened by honor and glory, and become things of magic, spirits wrapped in steel that strengthen the arm and honor of their master.

The winner of this tournament may select any one living, non-unique personality currently aligned with their faction. This personality will perform a deed of such heroism (or if the winner prefers, villainy!) that it will awaken the spirit of their blade, and it will become a talisman of great power for that character's family. This blade, and its bearer, will be specified in the next two arcs of the Legend of the Five Rings storyline, guaranteeing that the legend of this character and their bravery lives on.

Story Point: Kakita Kensho-in will bear the Obsidian Hand.
Fiction: Sun and Moon, Part IV

Race to the Throne: This event will be worth the points listed in the results.

The Heavens are in turmoil.
For too long, the rightful and divine entities of the Celestial Heavens have tolerated the interlopers who walk among them. Although the spirits of past Emperors and those human souls elevated to the status of Fortunes are welcome among them, too many former mortals have overstepped their boundaries and made their home in the Celestial Heavens. Tengoku is the seat of gods, dragons, and Fortunes, and without the acceptance of their betters, mankind has no place there.

This insult will be borne no longer.

The Jade and Obsidian dragons, unique creatures born of destiny and possessing an unprecedented power shared between two realms, have ascended to the Heavens and challenged Hitomi and Yakamo. The rightful will be restored. The truly divine will reign in the Heavens once more, or the current will prove they are truly the divine. And yet, even if the Obsidian and Jade dragons should succeed, the judgment of the Heavens will not yet be finished with mankind.

There will be a reckoning.

This is only the beginning.

Just as the Sun chooses a hero to receive its blessings, so too does the victorious Moon seek those worth of its favor. Although it too seeks a recipient who demonstrates the proper respect for the Celestial Order, the Moon has no little use for conventional heroes, and instead seeks one who can walk the fine line between reverence for the Order and the wicked ways over which the Moon hold sway.

The winner of this tournament will select from a list one personality of his faction who shall be chosen by the Moon to bear the new Obsidian Hand. The dark powers commanded by this artifact will elevate its bearer to new levels of influence throughout the seedy underbelly of Rokugan.

Story Point: A temple to the moon will be built in Unicorn lands.

Race to the Throne: This event will be worth 4 military points for first place, 2 for second and 1 each for third and fourth.

The tumult in the Celestial Heavens is completely unprecedented in Rokugan, for never have the divine entities of Tengoku risen up and demanded that the delicate balance, established at the beginning of time and changed only in recent years by the actions of man, be restored to its previous state. Now, two dragons battle against the mortal interlopers Yakamo and Hitomi, determined to expunge the stain of mankind from the Heavens' highest ranks. Whatever the outcome, the shugenja and monks of Rokugan know that they must pay proper deference and respect to the victors, for to do otherwise could spell ruination for all they hold dear.

The winner of this tournament will have a temple erected to the victorious entity not previously selected at the South American Championships, either the Sun or the Moon, within his clan's lands. Either the Temple of the Victorious Sun or the Temple of the Victorious Moon will be the first of its kind, and will become the primary site of worship for the entity in question throughout the Empire.

This is only the beginning.

Lady Moon, ever an enigmatic and wrathful entity, has been challenged for her position atop the Celestial Order by the Obsidian Dragon, a truly divine entity. Only one can hold the position of Moon, however, and the struggle between the two will leave one the victor, and one the defeated. The defeated will fall to earth, shattered and broken, and be discovered there in their last moments by a single mortal, who shall hear secrets unlike any ever heard by mortals, and receive a final blessing.

The winner of this tournament may select any one living personality currently aligned to his faction. This individual will be present at the side of the defeated as they breathe their final breath, and learn the secrets they have to impart before they passes on, as well as receiving their final blessing.

Story Point: Shinjo Hanari will found a new monk sect.

Race to the Throne: This event will be worth 4 military points for first place, 2 for second and 1 each for third and fourth. Additional points in each of the other spheres will be awarded, 3 points for first place and 1 for second.

The wish of every honorable samurai is to perish in the service of his lord. For many, however, that end never arrives, and instead they seek honorable retirement within the ranks of the Brotherhood of Shinsei, venerable scholars and seekers of enlightenment. When a samurai enters the monastery, he surrenders his name and all his worldly trappings, taking on a new name both to symbolize his new purpose in life, and to avoid bringing dishonor to his family through what may be a life of inactivity. Some, however, find greater destiny in their new life than ever reached in their old.

The winner of this tournament may select any Clan War era personality affiliated with his clan. Spider Clan players may pick Shadowlands personalities, with story team approval, who will found a dark monk family. This personality must not be one known to have been killed. Instead, this personality will be featured in a new fiction, and be revealed to be the founder and head of a new sect of the Brotherhood of Shinsei. This sect will be designed with the assistance of the winner, and be based on the personality of the selected samurai. Cards referencing this sect may appear in future expansions, and the sect will receive a Basic School in the role-playing game as well as a full write-up on its background.
