AEG is both pleased and proud to announce the return of the Winter Court Play-By-Post Roleplaying Event. Not only will this Winter Court be an integral part of the Celestial Edition Mega Game, it will also be one of the major events bridging into Legend of the Five Rings' 15th-anniversary year.

We have taken the huge amounts of feedback and input from the previous Winter Court and are confident that this event will live up to the expectations and excitement it rightly engenders. Rebecca Hobart (Cryllia of the previous Winter Court and one of the staff for Heroes of Rokugan) is undertaking the organization of the event, and has already demonstrated a clear vision of what this event has to achieve, and how to go about it.

Winter Court 09-10 will open to players on November 15th. Play will begin on November 23rd and end on January 15th. The forums will close to players on January 22nd.

Like Winter Court: Kyuden Otomo, this Winter Court will be a forum-based play-by-post event.

In a time of war against invaders that are poorly understood at best, the Empire can afford few chances to allow the confusion that has followed in the wake of past deaths of Emperors. With invaders pushing farther into the Empire, one clan will be selected to augment the standing defenses of the Imperial City and ensure that the Empress and her Chosen cannot be threatened by advance forces from the invading armies.

The winning player of this tournament may select any one elite unit from the clan used to win the tournament. That unit is immediately transferred in its entirety to the Imperial City at the command of the Emerald Champion, in order to ensure the safety of the Empress. For example, if a Lion player won the tournament, he could select the Akodo Elite Guard, the Ikoma Guardians, the Matsu House Guard, the Deathseekers, etc.

A feared and fearsome force in the cosmology of Rokugan, the Frost Dragon is the wrathful aspect of Inari, the Fortune of Rice. Offerings to the dragon are common in the spring and fall, as it is believed that placating it can prevent late and early frosts, events that can devastate harvests and lead entire villages to starvation.

The winner of this tournament will determine the clan of a young samurai who performs a kindness for Inari when the Fortune is masquerading in human form. This kindness will so impress the Fortune that the samurai will be blessed, becoming the favored of the Frost Dragon and rendering his entire clan's provinces immune to the dragon's touch. Such a blessing will ensure bountiful harvests, something the Empire requires greatly in the aftermath of the War of Dark Fire.

Fiction: A Season of Intrigue
Fiction: The Hunt for the Ebon Daughter, Part I & Part II

With a war raging in the south and the north still rebuilding in the aftermath of the War of Dark Fire, the Empire of Rokugan can ill afford any other crises. And yet, amid the horror of war, a threat potentially even greater has presented itself: plague. Seeking the truth behind this new plague, agents of the Emerald and Jade Champions have discovered rumors of a new enemy, an individual called the Ebon Daughter. This individual moves across the Empire seemingly without limitation, appearing at random across the face of Rokugan. Wherever she appears, the plague soon follows, and the Empress desires her to be detained, that this threat might be abated.

The winner of this tournament will determine the clan that will be tasked by the Empress to hunt down and apprehend the Ebon Daughter. It will not be a simple task, as the throne dare not risk exposing her existence to the Empire at large, and in the hunt, the clan bringing her to justice will likely be at odds with other clans. Still, it is a duty bestowed by the Divine Empress, and no clan will permit hardship to prevent its completion.

With the attack on the Great Carpenter Wall surpassing all history of such events, the united forces of the Crab, Lion, and Unicorn have had little choice but to gradually fall back, sacrificing portions of the Wall and the greater Crab provinces in order to prevent being completely overrun. As the Empire's new enemy advances, however, the opportunity to breach their widening front lines and gain some insight into the nature of the threat they pose becomes greater with each passing day. And now a group of heroes shall breach the lines and discover the sinister, horrible truth behind these Destroyers that plague the Empire.

The winner of this tournament shall determine the clan affiliation of the samurai who will lead the incursion behind enemy lines in order to discover the truth. This individual shall be responsible for combating the threat and returning to the Empire to personally brief the Empress on the nature of that which threatens Rokugan.

Card: Gutobo (Experienced)

The life of a samurai is a life of service. Most are blessed to serve their lords, their clans, and their Empress as soldiers, honorable warriors who live and die at the command of those whom the Celestial Order has deemed worthy of such decisions. The vast majority of the time, the duties set before samurai are most welcome, as they allow samurai to gain honor and glory in the name of his ancestors.

There are times, though, when such things are not to be.

Some duties that are asked of a samurai, while honorable, are of such a nature that the very soul recoils at the idea of what must be done. Some duties are so filled with horror that only those who are greatest among the samurai of Rokugan are capable of fulfilling them, damning though they might be. Now is such a time, when the Divine Empress turns to her most loyal subjects, and seeks those who have the will and the courage to do what must be done.

The Horiuchi family has been struck worse than many with the plague that threatens the Empire. Nearly the entire family has fallen ill. With sadness, the Empress has announced that for the good of the Empire, the family must be purged. Which Clan will accept the Burden of Duty?

The winner of this tournament will determine the clan that the Divine Empress will choose to perform a duty such as has never been performed in the history of the Empire. Alone among the Great Clans, the Empress chooses the clan of the winner, the only clan with the strength to fulfill this terrible burden of duty.

Note: This is a sealed deck tournament.

In Rokugan, when disagreements of a serious nature cannot be resolved in any other manner, the sacred art of iaijutsu is employed to settle once and for all whatever has come between two members of the samurai caste. The two finalists of this event will each select one non-experienced, non-unique personality of the clan they are playing (subject to approval from the Story Team). These two personalities will engage in a duel, either to first blood or to the death (as determined by the finalists). The winner of the tournament will see his candidate emerge from the duel victorious.

Traditionally it falls to the Seppun family to provide yojimbo and guardsmen to protect the most important individuals in the Empire, namely the Empress, her family, the Imperial families, and the Emperor's Chosen. In many cases, however, such powerful individuals enjoy choosing their own chief yojimbo, many of whom are often taken from the ranks of the Great Clans. The winner of this tournament will select one non-experienced, non-unique personality from their clan. This individual will be chosen by the Imperial Advisor to serve as his chief yojimbo.

Story Point: Bayushi Paneki will contract the plague.

A new and virulent plague has broken out across the Empire of Rokugan. So far the Unicorn have suffered the worst of this disease, though it has reared its head in the Crane and Scorpion lands as well. Who knows how many traveling merchants and others may be carrying the disease now? The plague knows not the station of a man and even those at the highest levels of the Empire are not safe.

You now hold the life of a Clan Champion in your hands.

The plague will strike a leader of one Clan, and it is up to you to choose. Vote carefully, for this event will have wide-ranging impact.

Pray to the fortunes for your Champion, your Clan, and the Empire as a whole. Darker days yet still lie ahead.

Everyone who participates in the main storyline event at Gencon will be allowed to vote for the Clan Champion who will feel the cold grip of the plague, as well as fight for the main story of Burden of Duty. Each participant will receive a vote, and each Gencon event kit will contain an additional voting slip for those who purchase the kit. Once a reasonable majority of players have had an opportunity to purchase the kits, you may buy additional kits if you wish.

In May 2008, Legends of the Five Rings players raised over $5,000 for the fight against pancreatic cancer in the inaugural Solving the Riddle Global Charity Event. This July, we will once again have the chance to demonstrate our dedication to helping others by raising donations to fund pancreatic cancer research and patient support. Kotei 2009: A Shred of Doubt (Storyline)
The War of Dark Fire is upon the Emerald Empire! The 2009 Kotei season sees the all out assault of the Dark Oracle of Fire across the northern borders of Rokugan. The lands of the Dragon, Unicorn, and Phoenix are threatened, and the newly crowned Empress Iweko I will answer the challenge with the full force of the Clans of Rokugan.

2009 Kotei Events will feature two competitions, one standard CCG tournament and one special "fan" contest specified by the TO. These could be theme deck, costuming, or any other non-ccg side event. Each of these two competitions will have their own unique story-line at each Kotei. The assaults on the northern borderlands are unexpected and lightning fast, and the Clans never know where the Empire will be struck next. As such, each Kotei events' storylines are being sent in sealed envelopes, to be opened only on the day of the event.

The Army of Fire forges southward, sweeping aside all resistance as the Empire attempts to marshal its defenses. With each day, reports of new calamities reach the ears of the Divine Empress, of ancestral homes burned to their foundations, of armies reduced to ash, of her people starving amid cinders and scorched earth.

Each second is now vital, every indecision a potentially disastrous shift in the line between survival and extinction. As the Empire staggers under the onslaught, the stories of its greatest heroes - of you - will change the face and outcome of the war in a way never before experienced in Legend of the Five Rings.

At this year's Kotei, you will have a chance to put your mark on the beginning of a new interactive arc for Legend of the Five Rings. As the War of Dark Fire rages, you will win victories and perform great deeds in service of the Empire. These victories and deeds will, in turn, be reflected and honored in upcoming card and fiction releases as L5R daily closes in on its 15th Anniversary.

Every week during the 2009 Kotei Season, the Story Team will incorporate each competition result into official fiction before the next weekend's tournaments, creating a vivid and up-to-the-minute chronicle of the events unfolding in the north.

In addition, as process allows, the Design Team will preview each and every card that derives from a Kotei victory, singling out the efforts of those triumphant as the war takes course, and heroes are born.

But the War of Dark Fire is just the beginning. Of a greater story. Of a greater game.

Every decision is vital. Every decision counts.

The struggle to save the Empire begins this Kotei Season.

The Northern Towers of Flame:
The War of Dark Fire, Part I

Card: Search for Survivors
Kousou Province, Dragon Lands: The Northern Tower of Flame, the sentry posts constructed by the Dragon Clan to hold off the minions of the Dark Oracle, have been overrun. Nothing remains but smoking ruins and blasted stone. For unknown reasons, the enemy has withdrawn in the aftermath of this victory, leaving an opportunity to search for survivors and information about the enemy. The winning clan will lead this dangerous charge into the scorched earth that was once the Northern Towers, and gain insight into the threat posed by this Army of Fire. (Theme Deck) The Imperial Court: Only a short time after news of the impending attack in the north reaches the Imperial Court, word of the first crushing defeat by the Army of Fire is heard as well. At the Empress' command, one hour of absolute silence is maintained in the Court, out of respect for those that have died in defense of their Empire. At the conclusion of the hour, one artisan steps foward with a painfully beautiful poem that speaks of the valour and moves the entire court with its beauty.
The High House of Light:
The War of Dark Fire, Part II

Card: Mirumoto Dakotsu
Card: Shinjo Yamauchi
Card: Utaku Toshie
Mucha Province, Dragon Lands: The High House of Light has had many names over the centuries, including Kyuden Togashi and Kyuden Hitomi. Now it stands threatened, the first true objective of the Dark Oracle of Fire's forces. A smaller incursion was repelled months ago, but now it has become obvious that the Dark Oracle was merely probing the Dragon's defenses, and the number of troops dedicated to its destruction now is beyond measure. Over the course of three tournaments, the clan identity of the heroes who will lead in its defense after the death of the officer in command will be determined. (Theme deck (Las Vegas) / Unknown (Wroclaw) / Costume (Madrid)) The Imperial Court: The siege at the High House of Light is dire news for the Imperial Court, as the assault of an ancestral estate of a Great Clan by forces from outside the Empire has never taken place. With initial estimate of the Army of Fire's size grim indeed, the Empress and her attendants are not optimistic that the forces of the Shogun and the Emerald Champion will reach the Dragon mountains in time. Gravely concerned over the potential disaster in the Dragon lands, a number of samurai gather together items given to their clans by the Dragon over the years and present them to the Empress so that she have mementos of her homeland by which to remember the days prior to her coronation, earning her gratitude in the process.

This tournament will determine the alignment of the samurai who saves the temple from the scouts, earning great favor with the Brotherhood of Shinsei in the process. (Theme Deck) The Imperial Court: The Brotherhood of Shinsei is respected and admired throughout the whole of Rokugan. News of an assault on their holdings in Far North Village sparks great outrage and support among even the most irreverent families. One family shall be the first to step forward with an offer of support and resources to ensure that the Brotherhood will need to preserve its holdings in Far North Village.

The War of Dark Fire, Part III

Card: The Eighth Legion
Haisho Province, Unicorn Lands: A hidden tower in the northermost Shinjo lands, the Exile's Watchtower is where the Unicorn send those who have so disgraced themselves that there is virtually no chance of redemption. Here they dwell in their own misery, a veritable legion of warriors hungry for an enemy to turn their blades against. The winner of this tournament will have a character who rallies the exiles to arms in defense of the Empire, securing additional forces from the Shogun and Emerald Champion in the process. (Theme Deck) The Imperial Court: As the decision to send troops to reinforce Exile's Tower sends shockwaves through the court, many question the decision of the Shogun and Emerald Champion to protect such a place. Once courtier steps forward at the Empress's behest with a tale of a samurai once exiled, who managed to find redemption and brought great honor to his family and clan despite his shame, giving all there hope that the men and women of Exile's Watchtower might rise to the occasion and prove themselves against the Army of Fire.
Bikami
The War of Dark Fire, Part III

Card: Senseki Province
Senseki Province, Unicorn Lands: Bikami is perhaps the most fertile region in the Unicorn provinces, lands already known for their abundant yield. Advance units from the Army of Fire, having already appeared in the Dragon lands and remote Far North Village, have now appeared as far south as Bikami. The city is put to the torch, and evacuation is the only option. The winner of this tournament will determine which clan aids the Unicorn in their evacuation, and in return, who will share the great excess of supplies brought away from the burning city. (Mixed art contest) The Imperial Court: The attack on Bikami is a matter of grave concern for all samurai, as it is a major city and center of food production. The implication that the Army of Fire can and will press further into the Empire, enough to threaten the prosperity of the clans and the Empress they serve. The severity of this threat will cause the clans to redouble their efforts to mobilize against the Army of Fire, and one sizeable force from one of the GreatClans shall be dispatched from the Imperial Court on the command of the Empress to shore up the defenses of the Unicorn and prevent further invasion.
Ryoshun's Shrine
The War of Dark Fire, Part III

Card: Saving Kazamusa
Ichiro province, Badger Lands: The ancient shrine of Ryoshun, discovered only a few short years previously, falls before the advancing Army of Fire despite the valiant attempts by the tiny Badger Clan to defend it. The devastation is complete, save for a single artifact carried away in the battered and broken hands of Kazumasa, the Explorer, who once served the Shogun and now serves the Badger. Bloodied and severely wounded, Kazumasa's life is only saved by the intervention of forces aligned to one of the Great Clans, a scouting patrol of which recovers his unconscious form from the mountain wilderness. (Theme Deck) The Imperial Court: Blasphemous on a scale unprecedented in the Empire, the destruction of Ryoshun's Shrine is a blow on par with the destruction of Otosan Uchi by the forces of the Shadowlands, and the Imperial Court begins to fear for the security of the Empire as a whole. One clan will step forward with an ancient relic of Ryoshun, offering it to the Badger ambassador that his clan might redeem themselves in its protection even as the Badger scramble to prevent the Empress's lands that they protect from being destroyed.

A traveling magistrate of the winning clan will be the only survivor, and will return the blades of the fallen phoenix to their families, gaining their favor in the process. (Costume) The Imperial Court: With more information about the threat faced by the empire becoming available, the great clans scramble to learn all they cam about their enemies and the Yobanjin tribes whence they came. The tower is destroyed utterly, and of the Shiba forces stationed there, only a small number survive to join with the scout patrols of another clan's forces in the area. (Charity Drive) The Imperial Court: The fall of Kitamahari results in some degree of backlash against the Phoenix in the Imperial Court, the attendees of which have grown angry and weary of the seemingly constant defeats by the Army of Fire. Toshibu Province, Dragon Lands: Heibeisu is the gateway from the Dragon lands into the vast, unspoiled reaches of Dragon Heart Plains, and of brisk trade between the clan and its neighbors to the west and southwest. It is also home to the Wolf Legion, valiant ronin pledged to serve the Dragon and Lion for their adherence to the traditions of the Toturi Dynasty. As the Army of Fire looms toward Heibeisu, its advance slowing with losses but still moving ever-forward, the forces of the winning clan will stand side-by-side with the Wolf Legion and earn their respect in battle. (Costume) The Imperial Court: Eager to pledge their support for the northern clans whose lands have borne the greatest portion of the war with the gaijin, and who have suffered the most, the clans seek a means of aiding them. One clan leads the way with plans to create a new trading house within the city of Heibeisu, and others will follow suit, transforming it into a hub of trade unseen even during the city's heyday prior to the fall of Otosan-Uchi.
Kyuden Tonbo
The War of Dark Fire, Part XI

Card: Unexpected Sympathy
Card: Questionable Charity
Tonbo Province, Dragonfly Lands: Ever the gateway to the Dragon lands, the Dragonfly lands have seen more trade than perhaps the lands of any other clan in the Empire. And yet the Tonbo do not waver. With their spouses and children sent away, the warriors and preists of the Dragonfly stand shoulder to shoulder, unwilling to allow even a single Yobanjin raider to enter their lands whiles they live. One clan shall offer sanctuary to their families, allow the Tonbo to fight on without fear of their loved ones. (Costume (Calgary) / Decoration (Saskatoon)) The Imperial Court: The defense of Kyuden Tonbo is essential, as it is the gateway from the mountains to the whole of the Empire. The valiant defense of the Tonbo provinces inspires those among the court, and the winning clan steps forward to propose that the survivors of the great battle be awarded a new family name to distinguish them among the Tonbo family.
Shiro Shiba
The War of Dark Fire, Part XII, Part XIII

Card: The Masters' Guard
Card: Heedless Assault
Card: Hasty Evaluation
Nejiro Province, Phoenix Lands: The stalwart fortress of the Phoenix lands stands threatened as the Army of Fire pushes ever deeper into the Empire of Rokugan Battered at every turn and forced to give up ground again and again, the Phoenix draw the line in the sand at their ancestral castle, and the Shiba vow that they will die to a man before they are driven from it. Forces from all sides converge upon the castle in what promises to the one of the grandest battles of the war so far, one in which many legends will be born. (Charity drive) The Imperial Court: There are no finer yojimbo in the Empire than those among the Shiba family, and it is not at all uncommon for important personages in other clans to call upon favours to ensure such protection for themselves. One clan shall step forward and volunteer any number of yojimbo to replace all those Shiba they can, in order for those men and women to return home and assist in the defence of their homes.
Ukabu Mura
The War of Dark Fire, Part XIII

Card: Agasha Kitsuki's Ashes
Ukabu Province, Phoenix Lands: Similar to Heibeisu in the Dragon lands, Ukabu Mura is the gateway from the Phoenix lands into the vast Dragon Heart Plain and the empire beyond. Among its greatest treasures is the shrine of Agasha Kitsuki, founder of the Kitsuki family and distant ancestor of the Divine Empress. The winning clan shall save the ashes of Agasha Kitsuki from destruction, that they might be preserved in the Empress' honor. (Charity drive (Thunder Bay) / Theme Deck (Denver, Auckland)) The Imperial Court: As one of the diplomatic centers of the Shiba lands, Ukabu Mura is home to many holdings that are well-known throughout the empire and beloved by many amoung other clans. Among the greatest of them is the House of the Evening Star, one of the most reputable and well-respected geisha houses in Rokugan. One attendant among the Imperial Court will arrange for the women of the Evening Star to be granted asylum and lodging within his clan's lands, that they might continue to ply their trade even as the safety of their homes remains uncertain.
Kyuden Asako
The War of Dark Fire, Part XIV

Card: Inexorable Defeat
Card: Mountain Storehouse
Yogen Province, Phoenix Lands: Familial estate of the simple Asako family, Kyuden Asako is a center of learning and diplomacy for the Phoenix Clan. It has stood as a home of artisans and ambassadors for centuries. Now, with the Army of Fire fast approaching, it must become a center of war as well. If it is lost, then the Army of Fire will gain a permanent essential foothold in the center of Phoenix lands, impeding travel and disrupting supply lines, and almost a thousand years of priceless art and history will be lost forever, consumed in fire at the command of a madman. (Costume (Irvine) / Costume (St. Louis)) The Imperial Court: One of the most common choices for the Emperor's Winter Court throughout history, Kyduen Asako is beloved by the entire empire. Those in the Imperial Court gather together to share stories of its splendor. One among them shall lead the gathering, greatly impressing the Divine Empress even in such terrible times, and in doing so earn a reputation as a historian, an orator, and an honored guest.
Shiro Mirumoto
The War of Dark Fire, Part XIV

Card: Daidoji Kyorai
Toshibu Province, Dragon Lands: After weeks and months of smaller engagements, the bulk of Army of Fire arrives and lays siege to the great fortress of Shiro Mirumoto. The Dragon army is assembled, but incomplete, as many units have been scattered throughout the provinces in defense of other holdings. The fighting is unlike anything ever experienced within the Draon lands, and the outcome remains uncertain. Heroes will distinguish themselves in battle, heroes of different Clans, and many will fall. (Costume) The Imperial Court: The eyes of the Empire are upon Shiro Mirumoto, where it is desperately hoped that the Army of Fire can be repelled and cast out of Rokugan. Many step forward to speak in glowing terms of the prowess of the Dragon, and of the Mirumoto specifically. The court will be enthralled by these tales, and they will inspire a great play that will sweep across the Empire in honor of the Empress' Clan.
Toi Koku
The War of Dark Fire, Part XV

Card: The Trap is Sprung!
Sinjutsu Province, Dragon Lands: Small, but immensely valuable, Toi Koku is a center of trade and food storage for the Dragon Clan. As such, the supplies found there are far in excess of what might be expected for the village's small size, and the Army of Fire is filled with legions of men who eat. The village is a prime target, but the clans have laid a deadly trap, a trap hinging upon the success of a single samurai in an almost suicidal gambit... (Charity drive) The Imperial Court: Due to a fluke in its annual circuit, the famous Mikado, a completely mobile tea house well known throughout the Empire for its incredible food, is located in Toi Koku at the time of the battle. Fearing the loss of yet another treasure of the Empire, one clan rapidly moves in forces to secure and evacuate it as well as as many Dragon citizens and supplies as possible, securing them against capture before the enemy arrives.
The Final Battle
The War of Dark Fire, Part XVI

Card: Unwavering Commitment
Card: Radiant Steel
Card: Touch of the Flames
To Be Determined: After countless battles, engagements, skirmishes and losses, the Army of Fire has finally traversed the difficult terrain in the northern third of Rokugan and emerged into the Empire proper. Now, however, the mountains cannot shield them, and while the Dragon, Unicorn, and Phoenix armies as well as the Imperial Legions are battered and exhausted from the fighting, the Army of Fire now faces the full, unbridled power of the united armies of the Great Clans. Heroes will die, and legends will be born. The final battle of the Northern War has come. (Costume (Nuernberg) / Theme Deck (Carolina) / Carolina (Sacramento)) The Imperial Court: As the final battle looms, the Imperial Court gathers to discuss the unprecedented nature of the war, and what it could mean if the inevitable occurs on the field of battle. With uncertainty and tension thick in the air, one among the attendants steps forward to propose a course of action to the Divine Empress, one that shocks and intrigues all in attendance...

This will be a Winner's Choice tournament. In a Winner's Choice tournament, the event will be sanctioned for a storyline effect, but no specific result will be determined in advance. Each time a Winner's Choice tournament is held, the winner may select one of the flavor traits listed below, which will then appear on a personality card aligned to the faction used in the tournament in a future expansion. During this season, when a flavor trait has been chosen by a winner, it will be removed from the list. When the list of available traits dwindles down to only a few left, it will be refreshed with all-new traits.

Possible traits:

Drunken Master - With martial arts on the rise as a leisure pursuit of samurai (primarily due to the Kumitae and related tournaments), who will rise to the fore with this bizarre fighting style?

Justicar - The Justicars are a unique sect of magistrates who hunt down fugitives and duel them to the death in order to prove their guilt and punish their crimes at the same time.

Kabuki Master - The art of kabuki is greatly prized in high society, and none are more adept at the art than this personality!

Card: Talisman of Maigo no Musha

The Empire is in turmoil in the face of disapproval from the Celestial Heavens. Mankind has lost his way, and presumed too much, meddling in affairs that are not for those without the spark of divinity within their soul. The precious few virtuous among them are to be rewarded, and the countless legions of the sinful are to be punished. There will be no mercy, for the wrath of the Heavens has been fully aroused.

Not all share this animosity, however.

From the murky depths of the Realm of Waiting, the god named Ryoshun watches with sadness. Alone among the sons and daughters of the original Lady Sun and Lord Moon, Ryoshun has no legacy in the mortal world, no descendants or followers to bear his name and celebrate his memory. For a thousand years he has watched the world of men without bias, without partiality, and he has seen the virtue that others have missed in their anger and bitterness.

Now the Guardian of the Spirit Realms has reached into the essence of each realm under his protection, and crafted a series of artifacts of incredible power, each the equal or better of the ancestral weapons held by the Great Clans. These incredible talismans of power will be gifted to those who demonstrate their worth, as a sign to the Heavens that the divine can inspire as well as censure.

The winner this tournament will determine the clan that receives the Talisman of Maigo no Musha. The Realm of Lost Heroes allows the bearer of its talisman to summon the counsel of a legion of dead heroes. The winner may choose what form the Talisman takes (a weapon, a suit of armor, an item of jewelry, or any other appropriate token that the winner prefers), and what non-experienced, non-unique Samurai-legal personality will be chosen to bear it.

The Realm of Dreams allows the bearer of its talisman to send his dreaming spirit free of his body to view any location he desires and see what transpires there. The winner may choose what form the Talisman takes (a weapon, a suit of armor, an item of jewelry, or any other appropriate token that the winner prefers), and what non-experienced, non-unique Samurai-legal personality will be chosen to bear it.

Fiction: Gift of Ryoshun I II
Card: Talisman of Sakkaku

The winner this tournament will determine the clan that receives the Talisman of Sakkaku. The favor of the Realm of Mischief is a powerful boon for those of sharp mind. The bearer of this talisman cannot be deceived in any way so long as he carries it with him. The winner may choose what form the Talisman takes (a weapon, a suit of armor, an item of jewelry, or any other appropriate token that the winner prefers), and what non-experienced, non-unique Samurai-legal personality will be chosen to bear it.

Of all the so-called Jewel Tournaments, the Topaz Championship is perhaps the one most eagerly anticipated. It is held every year, while the others are generally held once a generation, and is open to all who might be chosen by their clans to represent them. The Topaz Championship is held in the small town of Tsuma in the Crane provinces, and there, the finest youth from each Great Clan compete in a series of grueling tests to see who among them is the finest warrior, the most learned scholar, the most skilled orator, and a dozen other accolades. Those who pass the tests before them earn the right to undergo their gempukku ceremony, the sacred ritual where a child is given their daisho and declared a samurai, before the assembled Imperials and Clan Champions. The one who emerges from the tournament victorious over all others is named Topaz Champion, the greatest youth in the Empire, and greatness inevitably follows.

The winner of this tournament will be able to name a character that will appear as a new personality for their faction in the upcoming year. They will be included in discussions of any flavor traits that may appear on that card. This character will also appear as the star of the annual Topaz Championship fiction.
