Of all the so-called Jewel Tournaments, the Topaz Championship is perhaps the one most eagerly anticipated. It is held every year, while the others are generally held once a generation, and is open to all who might be chosen by their clans to represent them. The Topaz Championship is held in the small town of Tsuma in the Crane provinces, and there, the finest youth from each Great Clan compete in a series of grueling tests to see who among them is the finest warrior, the most learned scholar, the most skilled orator, and a dozen other accolades. Those who pass the tests before them earn the right to undergo their gempukku ceremony, the sacred ritual where a child is given their daisho and declared a samurai, before the assembled Imperials and Clan Champions. The one who emerges from the tournament victorious over all others is named Topaz Champion, the greatest youth in the Empire, and greatness inevitably follows.

The winner of this tournament will be able to name a character that will appear as a new personality for their faction in the upcoming year. They will be consulted as to the art description of this character, and will be included in discussions of any flavor traits that may appear on that card. This character will also appear as the star of the annual Topaz Championship fiction.

Race for the Throne: This event will be worth one military point for first place.

The Order of Heroes is a small and mysterious sect of the Brotherhood of Shinsei that reveres the Thunder Dragon, the patron of heroes. The brothers of the Order believe that it is their duty to aid others in realizing their potential. Toward this end, they have been known to use elaborate means to bring samurai into situations where there is a great need for heroes, and aiding them in rising to the occasion. The most infamous of these incidents is with the group of samurai known as the Champions of Bushido, whose actions were lauded all across the Empire. Now, the Order has located their next target, and plans to aid them in their rise to fame.

The winner of this tournament may select any one non-experienced, non-unique, living personality currently aligned to their faction. This personality will be targeted by the Order of Heroes and will undergo a great trial of some sort, overcoming incredible odds and emerging as one of the great heroes of their generation.

Race for the Throne:
Lion will receive 7 military points and 1 knowledge point.
Scorpion will receive 1 military point and 1 spirit point.
Dragon will receive 1 economy point.
Crab will receive 1 politics point.

Additional points will be awarded for furthest traveled (economy), best attire (politics), theme deck (knowledge) and best sportsman/most spirited (spirit).

Now more than ever, the Clans need to expand their strength if they are to have any chance of taking the throne. Toward that end, the winning faction of this event has constructed a new stronghold on one of their borders.

The winner may choose the border to be fortified (such as the Lion choosing to reinforce their Crane, Dragon, Scorpion, or Unicorn border), or they may instead choose to name the new fortress (for example, Black Silk Castle or something similar).

Race to the Throne: This event will be worth 2 military points for first place. One additional point in each of the other spheres will be awarded.

Centuries ago, the Crab lands were home to a man named Kaiu Anou, unquestionably the most brilliant architect that has ever walked the Empire of Rokugan. Anouís innovations revolutionized the construction of virtually every major structure in the Empire, and there is not a clan stronghold in existence today that does not bear some signs of his work. The Anou now serve the Miya, having been granted fealty to that family in exchange for generous gifts made to the Crab by the Emperor at the time. Now, Miya Taihu has offered his services to the Great Clans, on the condition that they assist his family in the proper execution of their duties during this time of discord. Generally celebrated as the most brilliant mind since his ancestor, Miya Taihu's assistance is greatly valued by each and every Great Clan.

The winner of this tournament will be able to name and write the art description for a stronghold of their faction. This will be used in the next available slot for that faction to receive a stronghold. In addition, the winning player will be able to participate in the design discussions for this stronghold, offering comments and gaining insight into the design process.

the true origins of the Ogre race.
Fiction: The Dawn of the Ogres
Race for the Throne:
Crab will receive 7 military points.
Crane will receive 6 military points.
Phoenix will receive 5 military points.
Scorpion will receive 4 military points.
Dragon will receive 4 military points.
Unicorn will receive 2 military points.

Race to the Throne: This event will be worth 7 military points for the most wins, 6 for second place, 5 for third, and so on.

To most, ogres are nothing more than simple-minded brutes in service to the Shadowlands. They are powerful, yes, and terrifying for the sheer destructive potential they can unleash when their ire is aroused, but ultimately they are not as dangerous as some other opponents that dark realm sends forth, such as the insidious oni of Jigoku. What virtually no one among Rokugan realizes is that the ogres were once something far greater, and far more dangerous.

The winning Clan of this global tournament will have one non-experienced, non-unique personality from their faction discover the true origins of the ogre race and, once this is revealed in the fiction, determine how their Clan reacts to and uses this knowledge.

Unlike global events in the past, this one will be a booster draft format event! It will use the new Shrine of Lady Sun draft pack, which will be sent with the event kit. Make sure you are up on all the rules for this format at our Rules Site.

Special Rule: The Ogre Warriors alternate-art participation card you receive may be used as one of your cards after drafting!

Winning: The winning player at each event may select the Clan to receive credit for the win. Since this is draft, we wonít hold you to the Clans you had to draft! The Clans with the most wins will receive points in the Military sphere of the Race for the Throne. 7 points for most reported wins, 6 for 2nd most reported wins, all the way down to 1 point.

Event Date: The event may be held at your local Dojo Days store November 9 through December 2. A store may run a total of two reportable events during this time.

Reporting: Reports are due back to AEG no later than December 10. A reporting form that may be mailed or faxed will be included!

Event Kits: Dojo Days stores of Level One and above do not need to request kits. Kits will be shipped to those stores automatically. If you would like to request a Kit for a store that is not a Level One Dojo Days store, please email Retail Support.

The winner of this tournament may either choose the identity of the winning personality (subject to Story Team approval), or the nature of the contest being held (a iaijutsu tournament, a sumotori tournament, a poetry contest, etc.)

Race to the Throne: This event will be worth 4 military points for first place, 2 for second place, and 1 each for third and fourth place. An additional point in each of the other spheres will be awarded, as well as a bonus spirit point for the food drive.

One year ago, a militant sect within the Brotherhood of Shinsei held a tournament to determine what warrior in the Empire was worthy to gain an ancient text containing secrets of unarmed combat, alleged to have been penned by the prophet Shinsei himself. The competition was fierce, and the final match was marred by the revelation that one among the contestants was Tainted, and may have contaminated the tournamentís winner. That the Kumitae was so infiltrated is a source of great shame for the sohei monks who convened it. In order to restore the reputation of their order, the monks have chosen to convene the tournament again. This time, the winner will be taken into their ranks and trained in the most dangerous martial arts known to exist in the Empire.

The winner of this tournament may select the identity of the character from their faction who will emerge victorious at the Kumitae this year. Other contestants will be determined by clan councils. All choices must be non-experienced, non-unique personalities. The victorious personality will appear in an experienced version sometime during 2008.

*All choices are subject to the approval of the Story Team.

This will be a Winner's Choice tournament. In a Winner's Choice tournament, the event will be sanctioned for a storyline effect, but no specific result will be determined in advance. Instead, a list of potential storyline effects will be provided, and the tournament winner may choose any result they wish from the list. These effects will be somewhat broader than other tournaments, and will hopefully allow the winner's deck to play a greater role in fleshing out the result.

The prize list for Winner's Choice tournaments is not static. Many results will be removed from the list completely after they are selected by a winner. Others will be removed if they spend a certain amount of time on the list without being selected. Still others may only be selected a finite number of times before being removed from the list permanently. Note that these choices do not guarantee the creation of a card in the game.

The prizes currently available for these tournaments are as follows:

Artist: A personality from the winning faction will create the next great work of art, one that will captivate the entire Empire and distract them from the horrors of war.
Battle: A member of the winning faction will distinguish themselves in glorious combat against the faction's enemies.
Discovery: The winning clan discovers a new cache of resources in their lands. This discovery will either help them directly or create new trade opportunities.
Duel: The winner may choose a character from his faction who will be involved in a duel with the second-place faction. The winner may choose whether his selected character wins or loses the duel in question.
Hero: The winning clan has a personality who discovers a group of bandits and dispatches them single-handedly. He or she gains the trust and respect for the local villagers who could be of assistance to him or her at some point in the future.
Honorific: The winner of the tournament may select one flavor trait (such as Moshi Mogai's Master of Pain or Ikoma Itagi's Lion Clan Philosopher) to appear on a personality of the winning faction in a later expansion. This choice is subject to Story Team approval and will be closely scrutinized.
Marriage: The winning clan has a personality marry someone from a clan of his or her choice. The winner may decide if it is a political marriage or a 'love-match.'
Rescue: A personality from the winning faction saves a personality from the clan of his or her choice. This does not forge an alliance between the clans, but it does create a bond between the two personalities.
Tournament: The winner gains the right to host a Winner's Choice tournament. This is subject to approval and will depend upon whether or not an appropriate venue is available.
Treasure: A lost artifact from centuries past is discovered. The winner may choose either the identity of the character from their faction who discovers it, or the treasure that is discovered. The Story Team has veto authority on either of these.

For over a thousand years, the dutiful samurai of Rokugan have diligently recorded the deeds of each generation's greatest heroes, knowing full well that their descendants would wish to honor their ancestors by reciting them in years to come. Even those families that do not place great emphasis on the traditional definitions of honor remember those who have gone before. The Miya family have maintained the most extensive records, attempting to record the deeds of all the Great Clans rather than a single clan, and their efforts have been impressive. Although an individual clan's records include more detail than the Miya, there is no greater source for comprehensive historical information. Now, in an attempt to forestall the conflicts that always seem to erupt between clans in a power vacuum, the Miya have extended the offer to the Great Clans for one among them to take their place alongside the Miya as the Imperial Historian.

The winning player of this tournament may select any one living, non-unique personality currently aligned to the faction of the deck played to win the tournament. That personality will be appointed as the Imperial Historian, and forge a close alliance between their clan and the Miya family.

Story Point: Matsu Kenji will discover the location of Reihado Shinsei.
Card: Reihado Shinsei

Reihado Shinsei is the most venerable of all shrines to the little prophet, the man history knows only as Shinsei. Shinsei's teachings have shaped the development of thousands of shugenja and monastic traditions, and many bushi as well. Although shrines to little prophet exist throughout the Empire, none have ever gained the special standing of Reihado Shinsei, a shrine rumored to have been created by Shinsei himself shortly before he traveled to the Shadowlands with the Seven Thunders. The tiny shrine is nestled among the rocky crags of the coastline south of Otosan Uchi, and despite that many have spent their lifetime searching for it, its location has remained one of history's greatest secrets.

Until now.

The winner of this tournament may select any living personality currently aligned with the faction used to win the tournament. This samurai will discover the location of Reihado Shinsei, and will lead his clan to its location. The clan will become responsible for ensuring that the shrine remains safe, and must do so without drawing attention to its location. Despite that the other clans will not know of the shrine's secret location, the clan responsible for guarding it will gain much insight from ready access to its almost supernatural serenity.

Every year for a brief few days, the schools of sea dragons migrate along the Rokugani coast. These small fish bear a striking resemblance to dragons, hence their name, and are considered omens of good fortune. They are also a delicacy, but are taken from the sea very sparingly to avoid drawing the ire of Suitengu, the Fortune of the Sea. Suitengu is a wrathful Fortune, but is also as tempestuous as the seas over which he holds dominion. It is during the Festival of the Sea Dragon, when those who reap his bounty offer their thanks for his benevolence, that Suitengu offers his infrequent blessings upon mortals.

The winner of this tournament will be able to make one of two possible choices as a samurai from the Great Clans claims a lost bounty of the sea. The winner may either choose the identity of the samurai who claims Suitengu's blessing by choosing any currently living personality aligned to the clan used to win the tournament, or they may choose that the nature of the blessing will be an ancient treasure lost to the seas and returned to mortal hands by Suitengu's choosing. (Please note that the Bloodsword Passion, lost to the seas centuries ago, may not be chosen for this prize.)

Legacy: The winner may select any one personality aligned with their faction during the Clan War era. A 'descendant' of that personality, either spiritual or biological, will appear in the storyline.
Spotlight: The winner may select any one non-unique, non-experienced personality of their faction. This personality will be featured in an upcoming fiction.
Tournament: The winner gains the right to host a Winner's Choice tournament. This is subject to approval and will depend upon whether or not an appropriate venue is available.
Duel: The winner may choose a character from his faction who will be involved in a duel with the second-place faction. The winner may choose whether his selected character wins or loses the duel in question.
Treasure: A lost artifact from centuries past is discovered. The winner may choose either the identity of the character from their faction who discovers it, or the treasure that is discovered. The Story Team has veto authority on either of these.

With the coming of Samurai Edition, a new threat lurks in the dark recesses of Rokugan: the Spider Clan. Although they bear a new name, their faces are familiar. They are the Lost, the most dangerous and cunning enemies ever produced by the Shadowlands, and now they hide among the Great Clans in an insidious attempt to corrupt their enemies, and even the code of bushido itself. Where once there was chaos, now there is strategy. Where once there was brute force, now there is subtlety. Unless the Great Clans discover the truth in time, an obsidian blade in the back may spell the end for countless samurai throughout the Empire.

The winning faction of this tournament will be the first to discover the existence and machinations of the sinister, scheming Spider Clan. The winner will be able to choose whether or not the first contact with the Spider will result in a tentative agreement of mutual assistance, immediate hostility, or if the two factions will remain neutral toward one another. If the Shadowlands are victorious, then the Spider Clan will remain secret until a time of their choosing.

Race to the Throne: This event will be worth four Military points for first place, two for second place, one each for third and fourth place, and one for each of the other four spheres.

With the Race for the Throne underway, many clans are desperate to gain an edge over their rivals. One group of samurai has discovered something that might gain them an advantage, but the secret they need is held by a forgotten Scorpion hero, who is in turn protected by an old Dragon monk dwelling in the most remote reaches of the Empire. If they can find the Dragon and solve his riddle, will the Scorpion give them the secrets they require?

The players of the Clan that wins will have a chance to solve the riddle, giving them advantages in the Race for the Throne if they do so.

Each of the top three players will receive an envelope containing a riddle and a numerical puzzle. The winner of the Challenge Booth will receive a clue that would help to solve the puzzle. The solution to the puzzle will be the key to a chest, which contains inside it the prize.

The Riddle:
If you break me, I do not stop working
If you touch me, I may be snared
If you lose me
Nothing will matter.
What am I?

Note: Due to a misunderstanding, the Lion Clan did not receive an advantage in the Race for the Throne from winning this tourney. As compensation, Lion Clan members were allowed to vote on whether a member of the Lion Clan would be named the Empress's consort, the captain of the Empress's Guard, or second in command to the Protector of the Imperial City, Bayushi Norachai.

The Clan of the winner of this tournament shall be the first to benefit from this mysterious ronin's wisdom and insight in the form of a personality card. The Dark Lord has declared that there shall be an Obsidian Champion, one terrible warrior who will enforce Daigotsu's will and ensure that the Spider's web is not threatened by outsiders or weaklings within their ranks.

The Naga people have existed since before mankind first walked the earth. Had they not entered their Great Sleep thousands of years ago, the Empire of Rokugan might never have come to pass. Now, they are a shade of their former selves, with the majority of their people returned to slumber, and only a handful remaining to guard their few remaining cities from the ravages of time and enemies. Even their great Akasha, the communal mind that all their race shares, has been touched by the minds of humans, and the results of that are not yet completely understood.

What can be understood, however, is that the souls of some of the Naga people's greatest heroes are mysteriously absent from the Akasha. Their voices have gone quiet, and been missing for far too long. Some feared them lost forever, but now a new possibility has arisen: the souls of the Naga may walk among the humans. How this may have come about is unknown, but the Naga have vowed to discover if their missing kinsmen still live, and if so, they must be brought back into the fold.

The faction of the first-place winner in this tournament will be contacted by the Naga people and informed that one among them, one of their young samurai, possesses the soul of an ancient Naga hero. The player may then choose whether or not the samurai in question will return to the Shinomen Mori and work alongside the Naga, creating a collaboration of sorts between his clan and the serpent men, or whether his clan will refuse the Naga's insistence on working together.

The night sky was bright with glowing embers cast up from a dozen burning buildings, and any peace the darkness should have brought was broken by the shouts of the dying, the wounded, and the wrathful.

Osami knelt and checked the status of one of his men. His face was bloodied, but he recognized the piecemeal armor at once. The man had served with him for over six months, but that service was at an end. Osami closed his eyes for the briefest of moments, offering a silent prayer for the man's sould.

"Osami-sama!" Another man ran toward him. He held a kumade, but the way in which he held it betrayed how recent his training had been. "Osami-sama!"

"Do not call me sama," the ronin said sharply."

"Oh, yes," the ashigaru said. "The bandits are fleeing! Their line is broken!"

Osami looked around at the village. It was not in ruins, but it was precariously close. Had the battle lasted even ten minutes more, their position could very well have been completely overrun. "Akihiro did not run," he said flatly. "His men broke. The ones he can find, he will kill himself." He shook his head. "His rage will be unquenchable."

"You've said that angry men make mistakes, Osami," the man said.

Osami nodded. "They do." He rose, sheathed his blade, then looked up at the night sky. The smoke had obscured the stars, but it was a cold, cloudless night with a full moon. There would be enough light. "Gather the rest and hold your position in the village," he ordered.

"We have to chase the bandits!"

"No," Osami said. "Akihiro is the threat. Leave him to me."

In the events of Hammer and Anvil 2: The Anvil's Legacy, the madman Kokujin sent his disciple, the ronin bandit-lord Akihiro to Rokugan following the death of Emperor Toturi Naseru. His mission was to wreak havoc, creating confusion and fear in the populace.

Consumed by their own petty squabbles, and the Khan's race for the throne, the Great Clans were either unaware of this threat, or were reluctant to commit resources to address it. Only the ronin hero Osami and his allies stood against Akihiro's assault. Against impossible odds, Osami has driven Akihiro back, thwarting his dark master's sinister plans and proving the strength of the people of Rokugan. Now, with the final battle imminent, the story of Osami must be completed.

Each tournament winner will help shape the events of a new fiction depicting Osami's story, and should answer the following questions:

1. What faction did you play in this tournament?
a. Is this the clan from which Osami originates, or
b. Is this the clan he considers his enemies?

2. What ally shall Osami call upon to aid him in the final stand against Akihiro?
a. Nagisa, the wandering duelist.
b. Ikuei, the freelance yojimbo.
c. Yamainu, the ruthless assassin.
d. No one. Osami will face Akihiro alone.

3. What shall become of Akihiro?
a. He will be slain in battle.
b. He will live to fight another day.
c. He will be cast out from Kokujin's pupils to wander the Empire, a broken and hunted man.

A wide smile blossomed in the shadows, visible even in the darkness that surrounded it. "The Emperor," a voice said. "The Emperor is dead."

"That is the report," the ronin said. "The survivors left the Crab lands, heading north. The news is spreading in their wake. Toturi Naseru died in the Shadowlands."

Laughter, at once dark and cheerful, rang out through the dank hideout. "Marvelous," the man in the shadows said. "Simply marvelous."

"What would you have us do, master?" the ronin asked.

"Choices," was the reply. "So many choices, each more wonderful than the last. But ultimately, there is a single choice. Can you see what it is my young friend? Do you know the path we will take?"

"No, master," the ronin answered.

The man called Kokujin stepped from the shadows. "The Emperor is dead, and all that remains is his Empire. He was called the Anvil, but Rokugan is the true Anvil. It is the forge upon which the souls of men are tempered. Men such as yourself, Akihiro."

The ronin bandit smiled. "If I am made of sterner stuff than most, master, it is because I have accepted your teachings and found strength."

"Of course!" Kokujin laughed. "And you will be my hammer, my instrument. I will use you against the Anvil, against the Empire, and we shall see if there are any remaining among them who are worthy, or if they are weak as we believe."

"They are weak, master. I will prove it to you."

The Dark Prophet smiled. "Of course you will."

***

With the Emperor dead, the Prophet of the Dark Lotus has dramatically increased his agenda of revolution. Even before Naseru fell, the City of Lies was nearly put to the torch by the crazed minions of Kokujin, who fans the flames of discontent to a fever pitch and unleashed his pawns upon the samurai of Rokugan. Now, he has sent forth one of his most brilliant and ruthless pupils, the bandit Akihiro, to test the mettle of the Empire's heroes. Another ronin, Osami, attempts to keep the balance by offering aid to the Great Clan. With an empty throne distracting the empire, will the ronin be the factor that tips the balance?

***

Based on your answers, and the answers of other winners around the world, we will decide which clan Osami (the ronin hero) will approach for help against Akihiro (Kokujin's right hand) and whether that clan will commit aid.

Please answer the following questions to help us determine the result for this global storyline event:

Which clan (or up to two clans, if you won a booster draft event) did you use in winning your victory?

If you used more than one clan, from which of the clans you played will the ronin hero Osami seek aid to combat the madman Akihiro?

Now you decide - will your chosen clan agree to assist the ronin in combating Kokujin's plans, knowing that consorting with wave men will harm their reputation in the courts, or will they reject the request and risk suffering at the Dark Prophet's hands?

Rescue: A personality from the winning faction saves a personality from the clan of his or her choice. This does not forge an alliance between the clans, but it does create a bond between the two personalities.

The glorious Emperor Toturi III gave his life for the empire in the Battle of the Tomb. His brothers have already renounced their claims on the throne, so it is held by his wife, Empress Kurako. Her claim is weak, and the Emperor left no heir, so the Khan has decided it is time for a new dynasty - his! While the clans debate in courts and start making their own claims, the Khan's army rides to the Imperial capital to take the throne in the name of the Unicorn!

During the Samurai arc, one Clan will establish a new line to rule over Rokugan. To rule, a clan must have Military might, Economic leverage, Political sway, control of Knowledge, and a grasp of Rokugan's Spirit. Any Clan may try to take the throne with any one of those means, but to keep it requires mastery of all five. Holding the throne is a great advantage - but nothing is certain until the Samurai Championships in fall of 2008!

In the 2007 Kotei season, the Clans will vie for an opening advantage while the Khan marches on the throne. Each Kotei winner will have to make one of the following four choices:

* Support the Khan
* Oppose the Khan
* Claim Power for your Clan
* Claim Enemy Territory for your Clan

To stop the Khan from taking the throne, more Kotei winners must oppose him than support him. Every Kotei winner who chooses to help the Khan raises the number required to stop him. The Khan is taking a great risk for this prize: if he fails, then his army will be decimated, leaving him vulnerable to military incursions. If he wins, though, he will sit on the throne, commanding the Imperial legions - giving him the strongest military at the start of Samurai Edition!

If you choose to ignore the Khan and take power for your clan, you will pick a prize from the list below. Each pick will add to the clan's strength in that choice's related sphere of power, giving the Clan a better starting position as the Samurai Edition Race for the Throne begins. Winners from every Clan can choose from the list - even Unicorn and the forces of darkness. The fight for the throne begins here!

Claiming Enemy Territory

Those winners who choose neither to support nor oppose the Khan and who have no desire to claim a prize that will aide them in the Race for the Throne can instead choose to seize territory from their enemies. A winner may declare from what Clan his faction is claiming territory. A list of target locations will be provided by the Story Team, and the winner will choose which is taken. In the case of clans with strong alliances, such as the Lion-Crane and Dragon-Scorpion alliance, this action may result in a form of occupation other than a military seizure.

Choosing the Spiritual Leader

Those people who win Most Spirited at each Kotei will be able to vote on who becomes the spiritual leader of Rokugan. The choices are:

* Togashi Satsu, Dragon Clan Champion.
* Moshi Amika, Lady of the Mantis.
* Moto Akikazu, Lord of Death.
* The Elemental Council, Leaders of the Phoenix.

Kotei Fantasy League 2007: The Shamesword
Winner: Story Effects:

Years ago, the tattooed madman Kokujin forged the Shameswords, successors to the Bloodswords, on the Anvil of Despair. Ten of these swords were crafted, and distributed throughout the Empire. Two of these have shown up, in the hands of Hiruma Todori and Asako Tsuruko. The winner of the 2006 Kotei Fantasy League will get to choose the clan (and Personality, pending Story Team approval) of the bearer of another of these fearsome blades.

About The Kotei Fantasy League:

Each week of Kotei season, people pick 4 people for each of that week's Koteis. If one or more of their picks makes top 4 at that kotei, they receive points based on the placement and number of participants:

1st Place - 3 times the number of participants
2nd Place - 2 times the number of participants
3rd/4th Place - 1 times the number of participants

The person with the most points scored over the entire Kotei season gets a Storyline result.
