Race to the Throne: This event will be worth one Military point.

The Topaz Championship is the gempukku tournament held every year and overseen by the Emperor himself. Only the best and brightest of the samurai caste are invited to perform their rite of passage in front of the most powerful nobles in Rokugan, and to do well in such a competition is often the first step to glory and fame throughout the young samurai's career. The winner of this tournament is deemed the "Topaz Champion" for the year, a position with no real authority but great prestige. Former Topaz Champions have been fawned upon by all the Clans in order to both get into the Emperor's good graces and earn the friendship of a samurai who will perhaps one day be one of Rokugan's celebrated heroes. Recent Topaz Champions include such revered samurai as Mirumoto Uso, Moto Najmudin, and Doji Domotai.

Unicorn-Tortoise
First, the Tortoise shall spread the worship of the Shi- Tien Yen-Wang, constructing shrines along their trade routes and in their ports.

Secondly, Tortoise shall be granted access to and passage through Unicorn lands, for the purpose of conducting matters of trade.
***
Unicorn-Oriole
1. The Oriole and the Unicorn shall have commerce between them, and the Unicorn shall be given preferential trade discount in the acquisition/trade of Tsi-manufactured blades/items. 10 percent of the output from the steel will be given/sold to the Unicorn Clan.

1.a This 10 percent of manufactured blades will consist of designs presented by the Unicorn Smithmaster, be they gaijin in origin or otherwise. The manufacture could be within Unicorn lands or in Oriole lands.

1.b The Oriole Clan reserves the right to copy these designs for their own academic purposes, and private commercial purposes, to a much, much lesser extent. It is understood though that sale of gaijin-designed weaponry is still not within the norms of the Empire, and such private trade by the Oriole, if given unfavorable light, shall be the sole responsibility of the Oriole Clan, with the Unicorn Clan disavowing any knowledge of such.

2. It has been made clear that Tsi Zutaka does not wish his creations to be turned into instruments of violence and destruction. The Unicorn Clan acknowledges the Oriole Clan in their right to cease all manufacturing of Tsi blades and weapons during Wartime, specifically, should any of the Great Clans declare war on each other. The Oriole are asking for respect in this decision without any bias or any economic or social repercussion of any kind from the Unicorn Clan. Trade of Tsi-manufactured blades and weapons will only resume once a time of peace is observed.

2.a The Oriole Clan, however, shall recognize that this applies universally to all clans they deal with, meaning if they provide someone else with weaponry, clearly inteded for a specific conflict, the contract is void. In the context of war, however, defense from bandit attacks and border skirmishes (i.e. Shadowlands incursion, etc) should not nullify the two clans' agreement.

3. As a further extension of this stipulation, attached here is a copied document made by the Hantei (OOC: we don't know which one) in declaring that no Minor Clan shall make any move of aggression towards a Great Clan, and the Oriole would see manufacturing of arms during wartime as a disobedience of this Imperial Decree.

4. The Unicorn agrees to incorporate a very small number of Oriole diplomats and swordsmiths, for passage into the Burning Sands in a future expedition of the Unicorn, with the intent of reaching Medinat al-Salaam.

4) No mention of this treaty shall be mentioned to any Clan other than the Mantis, and then only when in private situations if necessary. 5) The Mantis will use their ships, at no cost, to provide the allotted rice to the Crab Clan. Dragon-Oriole
My Lords, most wise Togashi Satsu, Champion of the Dragon, and most esteemed Kasuga Taigen, Head of the Minor Clan Assembly:

To formalize and legitimize negotiations contracted between Hoshi Oki, representative of the Dragon Clan, and Tsi Zutaka-sama, Daimyo of the Oriole, during the span of Winter Court, I present to you this draft for the treaty listing the deals made between the two clans. I present this with the approval of Kitsuki Tadashi-sama, head of the Dragon delegation for this Winter Court.

Listed below are the terms of the agreement:

1. Tsi Jieza, daughter of the Oriole daimyo, is looking for a husband and the Dragon have offered a Mirumoto as an answer. Zutaka-sama though has expressed with sincerity that he has chosen a Crab smith to marry his daughter, and apologizes to the Dragon for this misunderstanding. The Dragon accept his decision and have instead offered to assist in the coming marriage ceremony between the two. Representatives of the Hoshi will attend for they are known to bring luck in marriages.

2. A Shrine to Bishamon, Fortune of Strength will be constructed in the village of West Hub. This will be in continuation of the Dragon's support for the Oriole, not just economically but spiritually as well. Construction costs and materials will be provided by the Seppun as this was a prize given by Seppun Kiharu to the Dragon for participating in the Bushido contest.

3. Tsi Zutaka, on behalf of the Minor Clan Delegation, has invited the Dragon Clan to attend a shugenja competition in the lands of the newly-formed Bat Clan. The Dragon Clan has graciously accepted this offer and have extended it to their allies in the Phoenix. The invitation has been sent to Tamori Shaitung and Isawa Nakamuro as a gift for their coming bethrotal. This would prompt the exchange of knowledge between the Dragon and the Phoenix with the Komori.

4. The Dragon and the Oriole will also exchange students in hopes of refining their swordsmithing knowledge. The Tamori will send a student with adequate knowledge of the new "Water Hammer" technique, in return for learning even a small fraction of what the Tsi know.

5 Lastly, yet most importantly, the Dragon are giving rights to the Oriole to mine their mountains for invaluable steel to produce their famous Tsi Blades. In exchange for this precious right, the Oriole has willingly allowed trade with the Dragon, and shall be given preferrential trade discount in the aquisition/trade of Tsi-manufactured blades/items. 25 percent of the output from the steel will be given to the Dragon. That is one blade out of four produced.

It has been made clear that Tsi Zutaka does not wish his creations to be turned into instruments of violence and destruction. The Dragon Clan acknowledges the Oriole Clan in their right to cease all manufacturing of Tsi blades and weapons during Wartime, specifically, should any of the Great Clans declare war on each other. The Dragon shall respect this decision without any bias or any economic or social repercussion of any kind to the Oriole Clan.

Trade of Tsi-manufactured blades and weapons will only resume once a time of peace is observed. The Oriole Clan, however, shall recognize that this applies universally to all clans they deal with, meaning if they provide someone else with weaponry, clearly inteded for a specific conflict, the contract is void. In the context of war, however, defending ourselves from bandit attacks and border skirmishes, should not nullify the two clans' agreement.
***

2. That once hostilities have ended in their region of the Empire, the Unicorn shall construct, with Dragon blessing and aid, a shrine to the Shin-Tien Yen-Wang in Dragon territory.

I submit this to you in hopes that you will bless the exchange with you permission.

In hopes to further increase the exchange of knowledge and wisdom between the Phoenix and the Dragon, as well as to strengthen the growing alliance, Ochiai-sama and I have agreed to an exchange of students. One of the monks of the Order of Hoshi will be studying under the tutelage of the Asako to learn about the Phoenix, while an Asako will be studying with all of the Three Orders to learn about the Dragon.

We have agreed to send Hoshi Koichi to represent the Dragon while Asako Fumiko will represent the Phoenix. The said student exchange will occur once spring arrives.

May the Fortunes bless this enlightening exchange.

The Lion that are assigned above the visiting Crab will have the right to request such assistance, and the Crab in service to the Lion will have the right to decline to take part, but should they accept, the acceptance will constitute a waiver of this selective immunity until such time as this treaty expires, the goal of the mission is accomplished, or their Lion commanders release them from service. At the request of any daimyo of the Crab or Lion, such service may be reviewed for the purpose of determining an additional opportunity to re-instate this capacity to refuse orders.

Upon request by the daimyo of the Crab Clan or a representative thereof, the soldier exchange portion of this agreement may be placed upon hold for a temporary basis for any amount of time necessary so that the soldiers of the Crab serving beneath Lion banners may return to take part in their ever-vital duties in opposing the forces of the Shadowlands, pending agreement and approval of the daimyo of the Lion Clan, or a suitable representative thereof. In the event that the aforementioned hiatus of troop exchange occurs, those soldiers of the Lion serving beneath the banners of the Crab will be presented the opportunity to return to their original duties or to voluntarily remain under the command of the Crab to further assist with their endeavors. If the soldiers of the Lion elect to remain under the command of the Crab in this situation, they will be treated with the respect due to their station, obey all commands as directed by their superiors among the Crab, and their provisions will be the responsibility of the Crab Clan for this time until the soldier exchange portion of the treaty resumes. Those Crab placed in command of the Lion troops may elect to decline the voluntary extension of service if they are place in a situation to offer it, at which point those soldiers of the Lion would return to their original duties in Lion lands.

In such a situation as the troop exchange portion of this treaty is suspended, either the daimyo of the Crab Clan or the Lion Clan may elect to re-evaluate the treaty in its entirety, at such point in time its terms may be altered and re-implementation of this treaty would require the approval of the daimyo of both clans in question, or their appointed representatives.

In addition, for the duration of this treaty, all merchants traveling up the Oboreshinu Boekishi Kawa and Kawa Mitsu Kishi rivers will be granted immunity to blockades and considered as friendly once the inspections are complete. Such merchants owing allegiance to the Yasuki, or other families of the Crab Clan will be allowed to travel and trade with the waiver of one-half the current tariffs so long as their path involves travel along the listed water routes and their final destination for trade lies within the lands of the Lion Clan.

For the duration of this treaty, merchants owing allegience to the Yasuki or other families of the Crab Clan will be also considered to be friendly, and while traveling across land routes they will be given an option of carrying messages between the Beiden Outpost on the west side of the mountainsm, and either Kyukachu Mura or Shiro Matsu. Should they elect to do this, a waiver of one-half of the tariffs due will be implemented. The carrying of messages and reports will not alter their classification or allegiance, and will retain the status of the Crab Clan at large, should the relations of the Crab Clan or Lion Clan change throughout the duration of this treaty.

Crane-Phoenix
Agreement between the Crane and Phoenix Clans in reaffirming their Alliance.

The Crane delegation to Winter Court in agreement with the Phoenix delegation - does hereby propose the following so as to reaffirm their Alliance:

- That the Crane shall supply the Phoenix with 30,000 koku of Rice, 20,000 to be sent initially, 10,000 to be sent at spring thaw. The Crane will transport the initial shipment of 20,000 koku of rice to East Hub Village and the Phoenix will take responsibility from there. The second shipment will be delivered by the Crane to Toshi no Omoidasu. This rice is for the Phoenix's use and will not be divided with the Dragon or Scorpion by actions of the Phoenix.

- That the Crane will provide troops at the Phoenix's request to fight with the Phoenix against the enemies of the Empire when all peaceful avenues have been exhausted.

- That the Phoenix will allow a fair number of Crane to be trained by the Isawa in the ways of the kami in order that the Phoenix's reverence for the kami and peace might be seen through the Crane. Once the training of these sutdents is underway, to continue fostering good relations between our Clans additional mutal exchanges of students will be undertaken, among the schools of our Clans.

- That the Phoenix will allow a fair number of questions to be answered at the Isawa libraries by the Crane in order that the Phoenix's great wisdom might benefit the Empire through the Crane.

- That the Crane will be permitted to establish a Trade Embassy in Toshi no Omoidasu so that both Clans might grow in prosperity through the exchange of their resources for the Empire's benefit.

- That the Phoenix will provide troops at the Crane's request to fight with the Crane against the enemies of the Empire when all peaceful avenues have been exhausted. The Phoenix will not be called upon to attack the Dragon or the Scorpion by the Crane.

- Should the Phoenix or Crane take the field against the other in a conflict this treaty will no longer be binding.

- To affirm this treaty two marriages will be held at the discretion of the Elemental Council and Doji Domotai to bring the Clans closer together in the spirit of peace and friendship that has long guided them. Through these unions a Crane will marry into the Phoenix and a Phoenix into the Crane.

In all these things, do the Crane and Phoenix delegations intend to strengthen the bond between both Great Clans and further peace in the Empire.

Crab-Tortoise
1) The Crab shall send a number of Kaiu engineers to Badger lands, to assist the Badger in the rebuilding of their home.

2) The Tortoise shall receive access to Yasuki trade routes.

3) The Tortoise shall welcome the Yasuki aboard their ships and within their ports, allowing them to benefit from the Tortoise's protection, as well as the trust afforded to the Tortoise by the Mantis Clan.

Most honorable samurai,

I write to you in regards to the most honored event of Winter Court. The Fortunes smile upon us during this wonderful occasion. My daimyo has instructed me to answer the questions poised in regards to the formalities of court.

Format: Winter Court will be held using the gajin technology of a web forum. A special user name and password will be supplied to each individual. This user name will provide you with access to the main courtyard. Additionally, it will allow you access to your clan's private rooms. Since this is a web forum, there is no set schedule of play. You may post as often as you like when time permits. In addition to the web forum, you may also communicate in the darkened hallways outside of the rooms by sending private e-mails between samurai. Though should you choose to do this, please do CC the master officiator or one of his assistants. A third form of communication is provided for your convenience - teamspeak. It is a voice communication server allowing you to speak in real time. This is not required by any means. It simply is provided to assist in large conversations which require faster response than the web forum. Instructions for the teamspeak server will follow.

Personalities: Shawn Carman and the story line team have decided on 68 personalities will be in attendance. Based on the information you have provided, you will be assigned one of the personalities. If you want to play your own personality, you may do so. If you choose to go that path, you will be provided a set number of character creation points to build a character per the 3rd edition rules. The personalities in attendance are from the canon CCG. Creating your own character does not mean he will automatically become part of the canon storyline. Player-made personalities will not be as high ranking as those from the CCG, but they may still have a major impact on events. Please note AEG does reserve the right at its discretion to use a personality you create as part of the main L5R storyline.

At the end of the event, the players will vote on the dominant clan at the court, and that clan will receive 5 points in the Political Sphere for the Race to the Throne.

The GMs of the event will also choose the top five individual players, and each of them will be able to assign between 1 and 5 points in the Political Sphere to their clan, depending on their ranking. The top player will receive 5 points, the second place will receive 4, and so on down to the fifth place player, who will receive 1 point. If the winners are not members of Clans in the running for the Race, they will be allowed to allocate their points to a Clan of their choice. The top player will also be eligible for a share of the Samurai Fund, should he attend the 2008 Championships.

This will be a Winner's Choice tournament. In a Winner's Choice tournament, the event will be sanctioned for a storyline effect, but no specific result will be determined in advance. Instead, a list of potential storyline effects will be provided, and the tournament winner may choose any result they wish from the list. These effects will be somewhat broader than other tournaments, and will hopefully allow the winner's deck to play a greater role in fleshing out the result.

The prize list for Winner's Choice tournaments is not static. Many results will be removed from the list completely after they are selected by a winner. Others will be removed if they spend a certain amount of time on the list without being selected. Still others may only be selected a finite number of times before being removed from the list permanently. Note that these choices do not guarantee the creation of a card in the game.

The prizes currently available for these tournaments are as follows:

Artist: A personality from the winning faction will create the next great work of art, one that will captivate the entire Empire and distract them from the horrors of war.
Battle: A member of the winning faction will distinguish themselves in glorious combat against the faction's enemies.
Discovery: The winning clan discovers a new cache of resources in their lands. This discovery will either help them directly or create new trade opportunities.
Hero: The winning clan has a personality who discovers a group of bandits and dispatches them single-handedly. He or she gains the trust and respect for the local villagers who could be of assistance to him or her at some point in the future.
Honorific: The winner of the tournament may select one flavor trait (such as Moshi Mogai's Master of Pain or Ikoma Itagi's Lion Clan Philosopher) to appear on a personality of the winning faction in a later expansion. This choice is subject to Story Team approval and will be closely scrutinized.
Legacy: The winner may select any one personality aligned with their faction during the Clan War era. A 'descendant' of that personality, either spiritual or biological, will appear in the storyline.
Marriage: The winning clan has a personality marry someone from a clan of his or her choice. The winner may decide if it is a political marriage or a 'love-match.'
Rescue: A personality from the winning faction saves a personality from the clan of his or her choice. This does not forge an alliance between the clans, but it does create a bond between the two personalities.
Spotlight: The winner may select any one non-unique, non-experienced personality of their faction. This personality will be featured in an upcoming fiction.
Tournament: The winner gains the right to host a Winner's Choice tournament. This is subject to approval and will depend upon whether or not an appropriate venue is available.

For hundreds of years, the sinister Tomb of Iuchiban lay hidden in the most remote reaches of Rokugan, its terrible prisoner writhing in agony and lusting for the Empire's destruction. Despite its horrors and terrible enchantments, however, the Tomb could not contain its prisoner forever, and the Empire knows full well the suffering Iuchiban unleashed in his third campaign of terror. Now the Bloodspeaker is dead, and his cult with him, and the only remnant of his passing is the dreaded Tomb that bears his name, hidden far from the prying eyes of curious samurai.

The faction played by the winning player of this tournament shall be the faction that discovers Iuchiban's ancient tomb, known only to a sparse handful throughout the land. With such a discovery, the faction in question will face a difficult decision, and one that will ultimately be made by the winning player. Will the faction in question:

According to the mythology of Rokugan, a samurai's soul is contained within the katana he carries on his hip, just as the wakizashi holds his honor. The katana is said to carry the soul of every man that has ever carried it, and over time they come to represent the essence of the family line that carries it. The most fortunate carry the blade their grandfather carried, but for most that is not possible. Thus it is that each generation, hundreds of new blades are forged to be passed down to the grandchildren that cannot carry their ancestor's weapons. It is no wonder that the sword has become so important in the philosophy of samurai culture.

But what of a sword that has a greater purpose than simple combat?

Following the death of Rosoku, a number of exquisite blades appeared in the Empire. Ten were crafted as the parting gift of Tsi Xing Guo, the Fortune of Steel. These blades were given to the Keeper of Five Elements, Asahina Sekawa, and intended to be wielded by heroes to carve a new destiny for themselves. Sekawa disseminated the blades among the clans, where heroes have indeed taken them up and made them their own. The Crab blade Kettei was carried by the valiant Hida Daizu for a short time before he relinquished it to accept a personal weapon from Hida Kisada. The Dragon blade Yogen was likewise carried by the samurai Mirutmoto Ryosaki for a time before she took up the blade of her fallen father, Doji Reju. The blades of the Fortune of Steel were not the only blades given to the Empire, however.

After the death of the prophet Rosoku, descendant of Shinsei, the fate of the Empire was altered. A short time later, a blade appeared in the throne room of the Imperial Palace while it was unoccupied. The Seppun who guard the palace have been unable to determine how the blade appeared within the chamber, and the Hidden Guard have decreed that the blade resonates with the influence of Tengoku, the Celestial Heavens. After a time of consideration, the Emperor granted the blade to his Emerald Champion, that it might find its way into the hands of his most loyal and lawful servants. The story of these blades, both those created by the Fortunes and those by parties unknown, has yet to be told.

Until now.

The highest placing player in each faction shall select the character that carries the blade created for their faction by the Fortune of Steel. The character must be a living personality currently aligned with the faction in question. The winner of the tournament may also determine the character who wields the Lotus Blade, a mysterious katana of considerable power that is as yet poorly understood. The tournament winner may choose to select any living, non-unique personality to bear the blade or, if they prefer, they may instead name a new character that shall carry it. In both cases, the final choice is subject to approval by the Story Team.

Protector of the Imperial City
Story Effects:
Story Point: The Protector of Toshi Ranbo will be Bayushi Norachai.
Fiction: The Truest Test: 1 2 3

Centuries ago, the Imperial City of Otosan Uchi was protected by the forces of a single man, a specially appointed adjunct to the Emerald Champion called the Protector of Otosan Uchi. The Protector's duty was to oversee the Imperial guards and legionnaires responsible for protecting the Emperor's city, so that the Emerald Champion could turn his attention to the upholding of the Emperor's laws throughout the Empire. In time, the position fell into disuse, and although the wily courtier Ikoma Sume attempted to resurrect it for his nephew Otemi a decade ago, it was decided that the position was redundant and was left unfilled.

Until now.

In the Emperor's absence, the Shogun has moved his forces into the Imperial City in order to better protect it from those tempted by an empty throne. The Empress does not trust the Shogun, however, and wishes to see him remove his forces. In order to make this possible, the Empress has declared that a Protector of the Imperial City shall be appointed, resurrecting the ancient position to resolve her dispute with the Shogun over the city's protection. While some clans question the position's necessity, none are willing to pass up the opportunity to gain the Empress's favor. After much political jockeying, the Empress has selected a chosen few to serve as finalists in her decision.

Akodo Kobi
Quiet and reserved, the samurai-ko Akodo Kobi is a virtual unknown within the Imperial City. She is known to be a favored student of the former Akodo daimyo, Akodo Ginawa, as well as one of Akodo Shigetoshis personal yojimbo. Her record of service is without a single blemish, and she has served in both the War of the Rich Frog and the current struggle with the Dragon to the north. While few know her, the personal recommendations of both Ikoma Otemi and Doji Domotai have caused many to look at her with great favor for the position.

Bayushi Norachai
A principle aide to the Emerald Champion, Bayushi Norachai is well respected by both his fellow Scorpion and by those who look to the Emerald Champion for assistance. Some distrust him because of his clan affiliation, but no one can deny that he fulfills his duties admirably and with great reverence for the law. Already well connected within the Imperial City, Norachai's ascendance to the position would be quick, and would considerably decrease the Shogun's rationale for remaining within the city.

Hida Sakamoto
One of the Crab's most respected generals, Hida Sakamoto is a veteran of countless battles atop the Kaiu Wall. He does not wish the Protectorate for himself, but rather has grimly accepted the responsibility that may be required of him. If by serving in the capital he can gain the Crab allies and resources they would not otherwise possess, he reasons, then he will do so. His absence will cost the clan little, he believes, because of Hida Kisada's presence atop the Wall. And, should someone else be appointed in his stead, then he can return to the battle refreshed, little the worse for wear.

Shinjo Shuilong
A veteran of the Junghar army, Shinjo Shuilong knows well the necessity of defending one's home and family from those who wish them ill. He has defended the Unicorn provinces alongside his brothers and cousins for over a decade, and has become a well-respected gunso in the Khan's army. Shinjo Shono's recommendation for Shuilong has gone far in establishing the officer as a strong candidate, given Shono's long-standing friendship with the Emperor, a fact that the Empress is not likely to overlook.

Fiction: The Emperor's Strength

The Emperor is dead, having sacrificed himself to save the Empire at the Battle of the Tomb of Seven Thunders. His sacrifice may be in vain, as the revolutions that have plagued the peasant population for months begin to accelerate, and the already strained relations between the Great Clans begin to degrade even futher. Those who work for peace have already begun to search for something that could allow them to inspre others. Unfortunately, the greatest such symbol is in the possession of Daigotsu, Dark Lord of the Shadowlands.

The Ancestral Sword of the Hantei would be a valuable icon around which to rally support for a peaceful resolution to the current power vacuum. Some would want to keep it secure and out of the hands of usurpers, while others would want to put it in the hands of those who would establish a new ruling dynasty.

The winner of this event will have a member of his or her faction involved in the Empire's attempt to retake the Ancestral Sword of the Hantei from the Shadowlands. Regardless of whether such an attempt is successful, the attempt alone will garner much honor and glory.

Shinsei, the philosophical pillar of Rokugan, left a spiritual legacy of an achievable enlightenment. He also left a physical and organizational legacy in the Brotherhood of Shinsei. Like Shinsei, members of the brotherhood attempted to master a fighting style that focused on unarmed combat.

An illustrated manual of jiujitsu stances, designed to created harmony between mind and body but martially powerful all the same, was recently found and has been attributed to Shinsei himself.

During this time of uncertainty for the Empire with the Emperor missing and recent wars still being lamented, a martial sect within the Brotherhood has decreed that an unarmed martial contest will be held with an invitation sent to each Clan to send a competitor. The winner's clan will be charged with the honor of safeguarding this venerable tract and disseminating its knowledge to all who are interested.

by the Empire, or should they roam freely?
2. Should the Nezumi break with their traditions
and adopt Bushido, or should they stay as they are?
3. If the Chief of Chiefs, Kan'ok'tichek,
were to die, from what clan would his successor be?
Scorpion:
1. Should the Scorpion help their allies, the Dragon,
openly, or help them from the shadows?
2. Should the secrets revealed at the battle at the
tomb be revealed for the good of the Empire or concealed?
3. Should the Scorpion kill Daigotsu Soetsu, or just let
the Empire think that he was killed?
Shadowlands:
1. What is the destiny of the Lost: to stand with
the clans, or to destroy the Empire from within?
2. Does true power lie with the seductive secrets of
or the sheer physical might brought about by the Taint?
3. Where does the destiny of the Shadowlands lie: the
oni hordes of Kyoso no Oni, or the sinister machinations of the Lost?
Unicorn:
1. Who will the Unicorn support, the Khan
or the Empire?
2. Whom do the Unicorn see as their closest allies:
The Dragon, the Scorpion, the Mantis, or the Shadowlands?
3. Which of the Unicorn families will be
responsible for maintaining relations with other clans?

1. The Crab will accept lesser darkness from within
the clan, but will not compromise with the Shadowlands.
2. The Crab will make attacks into the Shadowlands
to attempt to push them back from the Wall.
3. The Toritaka will be the new Inquisitors.
This was decided by arm-wrestling.

1. The harriers, despite their dishonor, will be
allowed a chance to redeem their honor.
2. Kakita Matabei will rise to command of the
Empress's Guard.
3. The Asahina will remain on their current,
militaristic path.

1. There is no single "true" Path. All three of
the paths followed by the tattooed orders are true.
2. Satsu should remain in his position as
the Dragon Clan Champion.
3. The Dragon should use the collected nemuranai
to further the interests of the Clan.

1. The Lion shall serve the Emperor, whoever he
may be.
2. The bride of the Lion Clan Champion shall come
from the Crane Clan.
3. Akodo Bakin's skills shall be used on the
field of battle.

1. The Mantis will become defenders of the people,
rather than the voice of the minor clans.
2. The Mantis will sell their excess food
to the Unicorn Clan.
3. The Mantis will choose to hire mercenaries
to repair their forces.

1. The Phoenix will look to find peace
through any means necessary.
2. The Elemental Masters will be chosen based on
merit, rather than just from the Isawa family.
3. The gates of Gisei Toshi will remain closed
to the rest of the Empire.

1. The Nezumi shall roam freely throughout
the Empire, as their nature prescribes.
2. The Nezumi will stick with their ancestral
traditions of survivalism and instincts.
3. The Chief of Chiefs will be chosen from the
One Tribe, and not from any specific tribe.

1. The Scorpion should help the Dragon from
the shadows.
2. The secrets revealed at the Tomb should be
concealed from the Empire.
3. The Scorpion should kill Daigotsu Soetsu.

1. The destiny of the Lost is to destroy the Empire.
From within, from without: TERROR!
2. True power lies with corrupted sorcery, magical
tattoos, everything that enhances you above the weak.
3. Unity is the future. With no option chosen, it
will be left up to fate.

1. The Unicorn will choose to support the
Khan over the Empire.
2. The Unicorn will further an alliance
with the Mantis Clan.
3. The Ide family will be responsible for
the Unicorn's relations with other clans.

Several months ago, brave samurai set out with the Emerald Champion to ride to the aid of the Emperor, deep within the Shadowlands. Now Nezumi return with word that the contingent is pinned down at the legendary Tomb of the Seven Thunders. Oni and other vile creatures of the Shadowlands move against them while they struggle valiantly to defend the Emperor, who is still in seclusion within the Tomb. Worse yet, the Nezumi report a mass of Oni moving towards the area of the Tomb, and their force is strong enough to overcome the defenders. The Clans must react for the good of their Emperor.

At the 2006 World Championships, the armies of the Clans arrive to do battle with the Oni, protecting their Emperor and allowing him to find the resolution of his quest. Will he find the Enlightenment he seeks, or will his quest end in failure as it did for his brothers? And what of the Lost, whose side will they take in this decisive battle? During the long battle, ten noble souls (each Top of Clan player) will be allowed entry into the Tomb. The Tomb will be physically represented at the World Championships, and within are artifacts of great power and mystery. Each player must privately choose the item they adopt for their Clan. While the proper choice can bring great power and glory, an improper choice may bring great peril. Will you choose to gain power for your Clan or deny another Clan their destiny? Seek the pieces of the map for guidance.

Clan Council
For the first time in the history of L5R, the players of each Clan will be allowed to together make decisions that will affect their Clan's future. Each player will be divided into Clans based on whom they are playing at the World Championships. These groups will each be posed unique questions related to their Clan and its future. The group will have a limited amount of time to reach consensus, at which point they must present an answer. These questions will be reflected in the next story arc and tournament environment.

Focus matches:
At this tourney, every round, the organizers will pick a match by table number. They will then announce which characters of the two clans playing are involved or at risk. In some matches, the loser is fated to die in the tomb, in others, different things happen.

The Great Bear, Hida Kisada, Fortune of Persistance, now walks the mortal realm once more. Though his return has had a profound effect on his former Clan, the Crab, his rebirth has not gone unnoticed by the rest of the Empire. Kisada sees his return as a chance to put right all that which went wrong in his former life.

This duty begins with his son.

Hida Kisada loved his wife dearly, a rare thing in Rokugan where most marriages are conducted for political reasons. Sadly, Kisdada's wife died during the birth of his son Sukune. Kisada never remarried, and as far as the Empire knows, had no children other than Sukune, O-Ushi and Yakamo.

Following his death and ascension to godhood, many truths were revealed to Hida Kisada. Among these was a most surprising revelation, he had a fourth son, conceived shortly before the Clan Wars. The mother, an honorable samurai, never told Kisada, nor anyone else. She found the Great Bears actions during the early days of the Clan War so shameful that she felt it better that her child live not knowing his father was a villain.

She died during the battle on the Day of Thunder, when the Crab cleansed their shame. Thus Kisada's son never knew his father. During the War of Spirits, he died as well, crushed beneath the heel of the Stone Crab. Now Kisada seeks to make amends in the only way he can, by seeking out his granddaughter.

Two tournaments will determine the identity of Kisada's missing graddaughter, now an adult samurai. The first tournament, presented by Salman Barakat will determine the clan of Kisada's missing heir. If the Nezumi win this price, they must select and Great or Minor Clan. Kisada's heir will be a member of this clan, and will have close ties to a Nezumi Tribe.

Fiction: Duty & Honor

Every morning, the true samurai rises with the knowledge that today may well be the day he is honored with death in service to his lord. This is not a matter of fear or regret, but one of joy, for there is no greater destiny for any samurai to achieve than to prove his unwavering devotion to his lord through death. Every day, thousands of samurai face trials of every conceivable manner. Many prove their worth and continue their lives of honorable service. Some die and wait to be reborn and seek their destiny anew. And a very fortunate few have the opportunity to demonstrate, to themselves and to their lord, that the code of bushido lives within their soul.

Bushido is the code of the samurai, not only warriors but shugenja, artisans, and courtiers as well. It is a philosophy of life that, when embraced, allows a samurai to achieve his destiny through strength of will and purity of purpose. On occasion, ordinary samurai placed in extraordinary circumstances can exhibit the true soul of a samurai. The so-called Champions of Bushido, seven samurai honored by the Emperor for their valor against treacherous bandits, were such individuals, but many more exist that rarely achieve such acclaim. For them, the true reward is in the certainty of their life.

The Trials of Bushido is a seven-part series of tournaments that will allow the winner to benefit their faction. The winning faction of each tournament will see one personality of that faction as the central figure in a fiction detailing their struggle with an obstacle that must be overcome in the name of their clan. Whether the individual succeeds or fails, the faction in question will benefit from their perseverance. Regardless of the individual's fate, the Brotherhood shall recognize their achievements or sacrifice by erecting a shrine to the specified tenet of bushido within the lands of the winning faction.

The Shogun holds great power in Rokugan while his brother, the Emperor, searches for the answers that can save his Empire. Yet the Shogun is suspected by many of coveting his brother's power, and desires the throne for himself. His most recent acts have done little to quell these suspicions.

The Shogun has sent word to the Great Clans of Rokugan, to the One Tribe of the Nezumi, and even the despised ambassador of the Lost, that that as a sign of his noble intentions he will assign one of his most trusted advisors to serve them. Ten people from Kaneka's inner circle of advisors, powerful men and women who have been in the background but instrumental in the Shogun's rise to power. The Shogun has offered their services to each of the Clans. Acceptance of such a gift will gain a Clan great favor with the Shogun, and such favor can be beneficial indeed. Those who refuse insult the Shogun's honor, however, and will be all the poorer for it.

The top of Clan for each faction at GenCon Indy 2006 will choose to accept one of these powerful personalities, or to reject the Shogun's offer. Their choice will not be easy, as any of these people would bring great power to their Clan. Once the decisions have been made, these personalities will appear in cards later this year, aligned to their patron Clan. Watch this site in the coming weeks for sneak previews of these new personalities!

GenCon Indy will also feature the North American Constructed Championships, Draft events, and many other great L5R events. The Challenge Booth will conclude the Voice in the Empire storyline event, granting a playable stronghold to a minor clan! Don't miss GenCon Indy, the best four days in L5R!

A new dragon has been born.

Created from the essence of Onnotangu, the deceased Lord Moon, the Obsidian Dragon was born to correct a great imbalance created by the actions of the Jade Dragon, a benevolent creature working in tandem with the Crab Clan to defeat the Shadowlands. Although not created of the Taint, the Obsidian Dragon is no less sinister. It is a creature of vice and sin, promoting dark qualities in mortals in order to help them achieve greatness. Those who master their vices become stronger, and those who do not are destroyed. It matters little to the Obsidian Dragon whether they survive, only that they grant it sustenance in the process.

The Obsidian Dragon was revealed recently through the actions of Agasha Miyoshi, priestess of the Temple of the Seven Dragons, and Isawa Angai, wife of the great Isawa Sezaru and a former Scorpion inquisitor. The dragon asked of Angai to name a person that could serve as its vassal in the mortal realm, an Oracle of Obsidian that could foment vice on a scale unprecedented in the Empire. For reasons known only to her, Angai smiled and whispered a name to the beast, which promptly disappeared.

The winner of this tournament will determine what faction the new Oracle of Obsidian is born into. The winner will be privately supplied a list of names to choose from, and will determine the identity of the new Oracle with the assistance of the Story Team.

News of the Emperor's travels has reached the ears of Rokugan's courts. His journey of discovery has led him through the lands of the Empire and beyond. The Clans are now faced with a choice. As the sworn servants of a sovereign Emperor, it falls upon them to defend his life against all threats, regardless of how far he may travel. Each Clan will send one representative to follow the Emperor's travels and join at him as yojimbo, led to the Emperor's side by a courageous Nezumi guide.

The top of Clan for each faction will be allowed to select any character from their Clan to make the journey to Naseru's side (pending Story Team approval). The representative chosen by the winner of the tournament will lead this dangerous expedition. The winner will also be allowed to choose from a list of current AEG artists who will depict their faction's representative in a new personality card released later this year. The Shadowlands top of Clan will have a special choice that will remain between that player and AEG until the time is right.

Origins 2006 will feature the United States Championships for Constructed, Draft, a storyline challenge booth and many other great L5R surprises! Origins attendees will also have the first chance to pick up the Test of Enlightenment set from a limited stock, don't miss it!

Fiction: Bride of Secrets

The Scorpion Clan Champion is traditionally known as the Master of Secrets, and few have lived up to that title so well as Bayushi Paneki. Respected and feared by all who know him, Paneki is a man of uncompromising principles and unwavering devotion to his Emperor and his clan. He values the traditions of his people, and like many, he looks upon the chaotic changes in leadership of the past decades with disdain. The Scorpion require a strong leader and a strong bloodline to defend them from their enemies, and to unleash them upon the enemies of their Emperor. If Paneki is to provide that for his people, then he must take a bride.

Paneki's chosen is none other than Toturi Miyako, daughter of the Monkey Clan Champion and commander of the First Legion. The strong alliance between the Monkey and the Scorpion is reason enough for such a union, but the two warriors have a long history of service together underneath the banner of Toturi Tsudao, the lost Empress Toturi II. Theirs is a bond, if not of love, of mutual respect and great admiration.

But Bayushi Paneki is a man with many enemies. Those who would dare not strike against the Scorpion directly have launched a bold attack against the vastly smaller Monkey Clan. Toturi Miyako has been kidnapped, taken by unknown assailants at a high cost as she traveled from her duties in Toshi Ranbo to her home province to make preparations for her wedding. Now, the Empire will feel the Master of Secrets' wrath.

The two players with the most wins during the Challenge Booth at Origins 2006 will face off in a final confrontation to determine what faction shall recover Toturi Miyako from her captors and return her to her betrothed. The winner shall expose the guilty parties, and shall determine whether or not the recovery of Paneki's bride will forge a fledgling alliance between their two clans, or if the Scorpion shall owe a great debt to the victorious faction.

At the request of the Shogun, and by decree of the Emperor Toturi III, Son of Heaven:

This year marks a change to the tournaments known as the Jewels of the Empire. For many years now the samurai of Rokugan have recognized their best at these events, and positions of importance and honor have been rewarded to those found deserving of greater service to the Empire.

The Emperor wishes to recognize the families who host these events and to shine light on the events and the samurai who attend them.

There are currently five Tests: Topaz, Ruby, Amethyst, Jade, and Emerald. Each of these storyline events have become an important part of L5R and have grown to legendary status. This year each of the Test events will be rewarded their perennial storyline prize, something players can look forward to face for the glory of their clan each year.

The Crown of the Amethyst Champion is an ancient gaijin artifact with a strange history. Those who possess the crown accrue great glory and wealth so long as it is kept safe, but should it ever be lost, the previous owner will find nothing but ruin for the remainder of their life. The first man in Rokugan to possess the Crown realized its power, and strove to use it for the betterment of his people. He was much beloved by all, and he called himself the Amethyst Champion in recognition of the Crown's abilities.

Over the centuries, the Crown has passed through the hands of many. Some of used its blessings for selfish reasons, while others lived lives of honor and duty. In recognition of one such individual, the Imperial families created the position of Amethyst Champion, named after the first man to possess the Crown, and tasked their champion with safeguarding the Crown while using its blessings for the betterment of the Empire. Now, the Crown has been discovered once more, brought to the Imperial families by a simple merchant seeking to be free of its temptations. In response, the Imperial families have decreed that a new Amethyst Champion must be found.

Unlike the Emerald, Topaz, Ruby, and Jade Champions, the Amethyst Champion has no specific duty other than to use the Crown's blessings wisely. Time and time again, the Imperial families have learned that attempting to administrate those blessings is fruitless, and instead have chosen to seek out a worthy individual to carry the burden and use its rewards as they see fit. Such a Champion must be gifted not only with the blade, but in the arts of oratory, poetry, and debate. The Amethyst Champion must be a shining example of the samurai ideal, lest they succumb to temptation and harm the Empire with their excesses.

For the first time ever, the Kotei Season will become the focus of a set of cards for Legend of the Five Rings, reflecting the actions of the players at the events.

The winner of each Kotei event will be able to select a personality from the list below who will become Enlightened. In addition, tournament reports, and direct observation by AEG staff and contractors will be used to develop new card art, card titles, flavor text, and game mechanics, related to the events at each Kotei.

The results of this effort will appear in "Test of Enlightenment", a 100 card set in the tradition of "Dawn of the Empire" and "1,000 Years of Darkness." The set will be packaged with a collector binder, and a special booklet containing information on each Kotei, including information about how each Kotei is represented in the set. "Test of Enlightenment" will be made available for sale on AEG's web site in June for shipping in July. The cards will be legal for both GenCon Indy and for the World Championships in Europe.

In addition, the highest placing players for each clan will receive a portion of long lost messages from the original Seven Thunders, which, when properly combined and interpreted, will reveal a major plot point in the Age of Enlightenment story arc!

Below is the list of characters eligible for Enlightenment in the Test of Enlightenment at the 2006 Kotei. The winner of each Kotei will choose a character from the list, depending on which Kotei they attend. The first 25 Kotei (by date) may choose from the first list, the second 25 may choose from the second list.

Since Asahina Sekawa achieved Enlightenment nothing has been the same in Rokugan. True understanding of the elements is possible, and many people want that power for themselves or their Clan. A group of mysterious figures have been seen traveling the length of the Empire and beyond on their own search for Enlightenment. While their quest has brought them great knowledge, they have not yet found the gift. However others in the Empire have.

Now is your chance to determine who receives the power of Enlightenment. But take care in choosing for those who are chosen will have a great responsibility and those who are not chosen may start down a path of their own.

The rules for choosing are as follows:

* The winner must choose a character from the Clan he was playing when he won the Kotei.

* Each Clan may only have 3 characters chosen during either of the two periods (i.e. 3 during the first 25, and 3 during the second 25)

* If a player of Clan X wins and 3 characters have already been chosen from his or her Clan, he may choose another eligible Clan. He may then choose a character from that Clan to gain Enlightenment. That character will owe a great debt to the Clan that won the Kotei.

* It may seem that this system could end with some Clans receiving no characters Enlightened. This is a true statement. If you want Enlightenment for your Clan, get out and fight for it. If you want other Clans to owe you for their gifts, get out and help them to Enlighten after your Clan's characters have obtained Enlightenment.

* Should a Clan receive no Enlightened characters at the end of the Kotei Season, that Clan will still have at minimum two characters in the Test of Enlightenment set, chosen by AEG. These characters will not share the gift of Enlightenment.

Kotei Fantasy League 2006: The Shamesword
Winner: Story Effects:
Doruk Ozaydin
Story Point: An unknown Scorpion will wield the Blade of Guile.
Card: Blade of Guile

Years ago, the tattooed madman Kokujin forged the Shameswords, successors to the Bloodswords, on the Anvil of Despair. Ten of these swords were crafted, and distributed throughout the Empire. Two of these have shown up, in the hands of Hiruma Todori and Asako Tsuruko. The winner of the 2006 Kotei Fantasy League will get to choose the clan (and Personality, pending Story Team approval) of the bearer of another of these fearsome blades.

About The Kotei Fantasy League:

Each week of Kotei season, people pick 4 people for each of that week's Koteis. If one or more of their picks makes top 4 at that kotei, they receive points based on the placement and number of participants:

1st Place - 3 times the number of participants
2nd Place - 2 times the number of participants
3rd/4th Place - 1 times the number of participants

The person with the most points scored over the entire Kotei season gets a Storyline result.

For as long as the samurai of Rokugan have despised the Shadowlands, the Nezumi people have hated the denizens of that dark region even longer. Once, the Nezumi people thrived, masters of a vast empire that spanned the lands south of Rokugan. The fall of a dark god, the fallen Kami Fu Leng, crushed their greatest city beneath his heavenly form as he plummeted from Tengoku, tearing open a wound in the earth that has never healed. Since that day, the Nezumi people have been scattered to the four winds, constantly battling the specters of starvation and plague.

D'gr'n-ki is a warrior with a passion for vengeance. His people, the Stained Paw tribe, were deceived by the wicked Tsuno into serving Daigotsu. It was only through the sacrifice of other tribes, standing shoulder to shoulder as the One Tribe, that the Stained Paw were freed from their delusions and servitude. D'gr'n-ki feels a burning shame at the role his people played in the Shadowlands' attempt to destroy the One Tribe, and he will not rest there is punishment. Other Nezumi look to him with pity, for it is a terrible thing for a Nezumi warrior to be so consumed with bloodlust.

Daigotsu Fumiaki is a pious man. In another life, perhaps he could have been a priest or a monk. Instead, he stands among the Lost, and his devotion is only to Fu Leng. In his zeal, he finds the Nezumi an abomination. Their invulnerability to his lord's touch is anathema to this fallen samurai, and he will see them hunted to extinction before he endures the insult of it all for one more moment.

You must choose which of these predators shall prove victorious:

1) Daigotsu Fumiaki
2) D'gr'n-ki

Story Point: Bayushi Moyotoshi will achieve his secret goal.
Fiction: Old Rivalries IV

Ryoko Owari Toshi.

No city in the Empire has such a reputation. It is a city of vice, a city of lies, a city of stories and a city of law. The Scorpion and Unicorn have contested its possession for generations, with one seizing control only to lose it to the other time and time again. It seemed that the cycle would continue unabated for decades to come until an arrangement between the ever-ambitious Khan and the Master of Secrets finally awarded the city's governance to the Scorpion. The Clan of Secrets controls the City of Lies, now and always.

The decision has not been uncontested. The honorable Unicorn governor, Shinjo Osema, petitioned the Khan numerous times to reconsider his decision, but the Khan refused. Chagatai did allow the Shinjo to maintain their holdings within the city, however, and as such a strong Unicorn presence within the city.

Moto Ogedei is an unpleasant man. He enjoys spending his leave in the City of Lies, drinking his fill of sake and engaging in the occasional brawl with anyone unfortunate enough to catch his eye. He has a reputation for a braggart and a lout, and that is exactly how he wishes it. His true purpose is to gather information on the city's seedy underbelly for the Khan. Nothing illicit moves throughout the city without Ogedei attempting to discover its origin, composition, and destination.

Bayushi Moyotoshi serves his lord in the manner of a true Scorpion. He deals with problems in a manner that is permanent and discrete, and no one ever connects these unpleasant acts with the Scorpion. Since the dawn of the Empire, the Lion and Crane have stood at odds with one another. The Emperor's Right Hand and the Emperor's Left Hand have never seen eye to eye, and the blood feud that began with Kakita and Matsu has continued nearly unabated for well over a thousand years.

Until now.

The first painful steps were taken by the previous champions Matsu Nimuro and Doji Kurohito. Although they were never friends, the two men respected one another as warriors, and perhaps looked forward to a day when they could face one another in combat and truly take the measure of one another. That day, sadly, never came, and both men have passed on to the afterlife with great honor. In their place, Ikoma Otemi and Doji Domotai have embraced the peace the two men began.

Not all are so eager for peace.

Ikoma Masote was a warmongering magistrate with a personal agenda. He discovered evidence of treachery on the part of Kurohito's wife, and withheld this information until a time when he could reveal it for maximum political impact. Doji Akiko was slain by her husband's hand, and Kurohito followed her in death. Their daughter Domotai exposed Masote's self-aggrandizement, and that he had withheld news of a traitor in the Emperor's court for months in hopes of making a greater name for himself. For this treachery, Ikoma Otemi ordered him to die a coward's death, and Doji Domotai herself dealt the killing blow.

Matsu Robun was one of Masote's yoriki, and he feels the shame of his master's death. He avoided Masote's disgrace, and feels that the loyal Lion did nothing but a great service to the Emperor by exposing the traitor Akiko. That the Crane have gone to such great lengths to discredit and execute Masote is nothing short of treasonous, a mocking vengeance thrown in the face of the Emperor's justice. Theirs was a petty political vendetta, and it must be cleansed with blood.

Kakita Osei is a patriot. She knew not what Akiko's intentions or activities were, only that they needed to be concealed from the Crane's many enemies. She arranged for the protection of Akiko's caravan, and it was her disgrace that Masote was allowed to seize it. Despite her horror over Akiko's actions, Osei learned long ago that her honor is nothing compared to that of her clan, and she sacrifices it willingly. Now, with the murderous Masote dealt with appropriately, she must finish concealing her clan's shame once and for all.

You must choose who will preserve the honor of their Clan:

1) Matsu Robun
2) Kakita Osei

Years ago, an innocent young woman left her home in the Phoenix lands to study alongside the serene sensei found in the Dragon Clan provinces. Asako Tsuruko was a gentle soul, and one who hoped to help bury the lingering animosity between Dragon and Phoenix after their war was at an end. Unfortunately, Tsukuro's good intentions led only to a terrible end. Falling under the influence of the Blade of Fury, a dreaded Shamesword crafted by the madman Kokujin, Tsukuro slowly went mad. Even as the blade devoured her sanity, it bolstered her power, and in her madness, she ruthlessly murdered the Mirumoto family daimyo, Mirumoto Uso. For years, the great leader's murder went unsolved until the monk Kaelung and the young samurai Mirumoto Kenzo, himself an expert at resisting the siren call of a cursed blade, uncovered the truth. By that time, Tsukuro had already fallen to the blade's influence, murdered by her beloved yojimbo. Finally, the tale was at an end, and the spirits of the dead could rest.

Or so it was believed.

Isawa Toshiji is a man with a great burden. As a judge in the Phoenix provinces, he passes judgment every day on the crimes of others. It falls to his calm, even temper to determine the fates of those who are incapable of ruling their own baser instincts. It is a difficult job, but Toshiji is a good man and his judgments are widely regarded as both merciful and fair. And yet, despite his reputation, Toshiji has harbored a secret fire in his heart for years. Tsukuro was his beloved, and her death has left him empty inside. Where once there was even-handed compassion, now there is only resentment and anger. The Dragon failed to protect his love. The Dragon allowed a madman from their ranks to destroy her. The Dragon must be punished.

Kitsuki Otojiro was the magistrate who investigated Tsukuro's murder at the behest of his lord Mirumoto Rosanjin. Before Rosanjin, Otojiro served the great general Mirumoto Uso, a man he admired and respected. Otojiro was one of Uso's principle advisors, and the old man looked upon Uso as a son. His death was a tragedy, and despite Rosanjin's apologies to the Phoenix for Tsukuro's death, none among the Phoenix have ever offered their apologies for the death of a great man. Otojiro is a magistrate, an enforcer of the law, and in this he feels the Phoenix have failed. They must make restitution, and Otojiro will see it done before his death. If he should face Uso in the afterlife, how can he bear to meet his eyes if the old magistrate does not do everything in his power to ensure that his lord's base murder is avenged?

You must choose who will avenge their loss:

1) Isawa Toshiji
2) Kitsuki Otojiro

Not so long ago, the children of Osano-wo very nearly went to war. The Crab and Mantis, long time allies and descendants of the Fortune of Fire and Thunder, struggled for control over a secret trade passage through the corrupted region known as the Sea of Shadow. In time, the Crab were victorious, and the Mantis were forbidden from sailing that treacherous span of the sea. Differences were forgotten, and the two clans became allies once more.

Recently, however, the Crab have lost a number of supply vessels near the passage in question. Knowing full well that the Mantis desperately need supplies for their war against the Phoenix, and attempting to stockpile the Crab's storehouses in preparation for an inevitable war with the Scorpion, Hida Kuon has ordered his vassal Hida Unkei to deal with the matter in his typical fashion: quickly, brutally, and permanently. Unkei has made no secret of his belief that the recent sightings of Mantis vessels near the trade route indicate their guilt, and it is his plan to ensure that the Mantis never again forget who rules the Sea of Shadows.

Tsuruchi Chae is an embittered soldier furious at having been removed from the front lines of her clan's war with the Phoenix. She desires nothing more than to slay the arrogant fools who have presumed to question the Mantis claim to Great Clan status. Unfortunately, the recent disappearance of a Mantis ship scheduled to return from the Ivory Kingdoms has been left to her to deal with, and deal with it she must. There are rumors that the Crab are active in the area, and looking for Mantis prey. The Crab will find in Chae and her men a prey that no hunter can hope to overcome, and then there will be war for them once again.

You must choose who will survive this encounter:

1) Tsuruchi Chae
2) Hida Unkei

The Tests of 2006 continue with the Test of the Ruby Champion. The Ruby Champion is recognized as one of the most skilled in both sword and law. The Ruby Champion will be given the honor of acting as a sensei to the Emerald Magistrates, guiding them in both their mastery of martial arts, as well as their interpretation of the Imperial Law. While this of course means great prestige for the samurai in question, a Clan could benefit greatly from having a new generation of Emerald Magistrates influenced by a member of their Clan.

The winner of the 2006 Test of the Ruby Champion will determine the Clan of origin of the new Ruby Champion, as well as decide if the character will stick to a strict interpretation of the Imperial Law, or attempt to subtly influence those in his or her charge.

Should the Shadowlands win, the Champion will be revealed to be a member of the Lost, further dividing the Empire on the question of the Shadowlands demand for Great Clan status. Should the Ratlings win, the Ratling player may choose a Clan other than Shadowlands to produce the Ruby Champion, but he or she will have a Ratling yojimbo.

Waves and storms are not the only thing that ravage the seas of Rokugan. Another breed of danger has always existed, though never manifested on the level of recent months. The ships of the Mantis and every other Great Clan have been victim to pirates of a most peculiar design. Disruption rather than pillaging seems to be their goal as the attacked ships have been sank rather than looted, their crews left clinging to pieces of their ships if they survive at all. These attackers wear no markings to distinguish their origin, leaving the survivors with little to contribute to their apprehension.

The winner of this event's Clan will discover the origins of these pirates and choose one of the following things to do with the information:

1. Take action personally to bring the pirates to justice
2. Discreetly work to further the pirates efforts to thwart sea trade
3. Turn over the information to the Mantis

The Year's End Festival is among the most celebrated holidays in Rokugan. It takes place on the day before the New Year's Festival begins, on the twenty-eighth day of the Tiger. It is a day when the people of Rokugan prepare themselves for the scrutiny of the gods, for it is said that on the first day of a new year, the Fortunes, the Kami, and even Lord Sun and Lady Moon pay particular attention the Empire, seeking something or someone worthy of their blessing and patronage. The Year's End Festival, also called Toshi no Ichi, is a time of ritual purification and preparation. Wards are placed on the homes of peasants to prevent the spirits of the old year from entering, while monasteries are emptied and scrubbed clean before the people are welcomed back within them with open arms. Shugenja pray for hours on end, inviting the blessings of the Heavens upon their lords and their temples.

As the Year's End Festival approaches, the gods turn their attention to an Empire that has lost its way. Though many seek enlightenment with pure hearts, an equal number have had their faith and their loyalty tested by the struggle against the Bloodspeakers, and with the trials their Emperor has faced against the Gozoku and the Shogun. With such tumult, the Heavens find the Great Clans unworthy of their favors, and turn instead to the lesser among their children, the humble samurai that serve the Minor Clans.

The winner of this tournament may choose for one Minor Clan to receive the New Year's Blessing from the Heavens. The clan that receives this blessing will have a hero rise from their ranks to gain prominence in the Empire, far in excess of any that has stood among them previously.

Choose one of the following:

1. The Badger Clan
2. The Bat Clan
3. The Dragonfly Clan
4. The Fox Clan
5. The Hare Clan
6. The Monkey Clan
7. The Ox Clan
8. The Sparrow Clan
9. The Tortoise Clan
10. None. No Clan proves worthy of the New Year's Blessing.
