All historians know that peace can be a fleeting thing, and the weakness that lives within the hearts of men drives them to create conflict where none exist. The Lotus Era is upon us, and as the specters of the past retreat the samurai of Rokugan will find new enemies - each other.

The winner of this tournament will make the most fateful of decisions. Whoever wins must declare a Great Clan with which the winning faction will go to war during the Lotus Era. Only Great Clans may be chosen; Nezumi and Shadowlands are not valid choices (read on for how this prize is altered for Nezumi or Shadowlands players). The choice to go to war cannot be declined. Peace is not an option so choose wisely. Keep in mind that choosing a clan distant from your own will only create greater strife as the armies of each must march across the Empire to confront one another.

If the Shadowlands win this tournament, then the winner may instead select two Great Clans, and the Shadowlands will instigate a war between them. If the Nezumi win this tournament, the winner may select two Great Clans to go to war and the Ratlings will ally with the clan of the winner's choice.

Heroes and Villains

Depending on whether GenCon ultimately results in a Lotus or Dark Lotus environment will have an impact on the European Championship story prize. The winner of this tournament will be allowed to select a personality to receive an experienced card (pending approval by the Story Team). If GenCon has a Lotus result, this Experienced personality will have the Hero trait, and he will be responsible for the defense of his clan in the coming war. If GenCon has a Dark Lotus result, this character will have the Villain trait, and will be defamed in the courts for his shameful behavior. The tale of how this character becomes a hero or villain will be related in a Weekly Fiction on the L5R website. These selected personalities are in addition to the Top of Clan Prize, and need not be the same character. (Personalities selected must be Lotus legal, non-Champion personalities.)

Top of Clan Prizes:

Periods of strife are not limited to large-scale warfare. Rokugan's history is full of epic conflicts between skilled warriors that have inspired plays, traditions, and legends. Hitomi and Yakamo, Dairya and Toshimoko, and Naseru and Kaneka are only a few of these great rivalries. At the European Championships, the seeds for new legends shall be born.

The Top of Clan player of each faction will select one personality from their faction. All of the selected personalities will receive Experienced cards in an upcoming expansion. In addition, the Story Team will match each of these personalities with one of the other personalities selected by another Top of Clan player. A bitter rivalry will form between these paired personalities, and be reflected in the storyline. The matchups will be revealed by the Story Team once all the Top of Clan personalities have been reported. (Personalities chosen must be from the following list.)

Fiction: The Test of Enlightenment 1 2
Fiction: The European Championships
Card: Porcelain Mask of Fu Leng (Experienced 2)

The age of the Lotus has begun. It is a time of change for Rokugan, an age of enlightenment - And the Shadowlands are no exception to this rule. From the depths of Jigoku, the Lost Brother Fu Leng has spoken to his people. Was not the Shadowlands, like Rokugan, founded and ruled by a divine Kami? Is not the Shadowlands, like Rokugan, governed by samurai who hold honor higher than all else?

The Shadowlands now demand recognition as a sovereign nation, equal to Rokugan. They have demanded that the Emperor recognize Fu Leng's place in the Celestial Order. To this end, Fu Leng has given his people a gift, to be passed on to the people of Rokugan. He has offered his Porcelain Mask to the first Rokugani samurai who acknowledges the Shadowlands and accepts the Lost's offer of an ambassador.

Can this gift be trusted? The Dark Kami has sworn by the Celestial Heavens that gave him form that the mask will not corrupt its wearer, but rather will smite down all of enemies, all of those who were too weak and foolish to recognize the potential in recognizing the Shadowlands new claims. The promise of a god, even a fallen god, is a powerful thing, but the decision ultimately lies in your hands.

Who will be the first to accept this bizarre promise of peace with the Empire's most powerful enemy? The winner of this tournament will be the first to choose whether or not his clan receives accepts a Lost ambassador in their court. If the winner chooses not to accept this offer, it will pass to the next highest ranking Top of Clan player, in order, until one accepts or until the Shadowlands Top of Clan player has the turn to choose. A Shadowlands player given the right to choose may choose any clan to accept the ambassador.

If the winner of this tournament decides not to accept the ambassador, his clan will still receive the Porcelain Mask and be allowed to either retain and use it or destroy it. If the winner destroys the Porcelain Mask of Fu Leng, his clan will be marked forever as an enemy of the Shadowlands and will stand as a defiant opponent of the Dark Kami. If a Shadowlands player wins and chooses this, a renegade Lost samurai will steal the mask and destroy it before it can be given to the Empire.

In addition, since Dragon chose to declare war on the Crane because of the European Championships, a special match between the Dragon and the Crane clans will decide who gets to draw first blood in their new conflict.

The Minor Clans are by definition much smaller than the Great Clans. With one exception, the Hare Clan, there is but a single family in each Minor Clan. Yet when a hero acts with bravery and distinction and proves himself to the Emperor, it is only right that his name be remembered.

The winner of the Challenge Booth may pick an existing Minor Clan. A new family name will be granted to this Minor Clan, and the faction played by the winner will be partially responsible for the events leading to this. The winner will be allowed input with the Story Team in determining this new name.

For the purposes of this prize, the legal choices are: Badger Clan, Bat Clan, Dragonfly Clan, Fox Clan, Hare Clan, Monkey Clan, Oriole Clan, Ox Clan, Sparrow Clan, and Tortoise Clan.

Among the common man, no Imperial Family is as beloved as the Miya. They are the Emperor's diplomats, his swift messengers, bringers of peace. They also carry a unique tradition - the Emperor's Blessing.

Each year the Miya family sets aside a portion of its great wealth to offer help to those in need. This gift is freely given, in the name of the Emperor, to improve the conditions of those who have been stricken by war, poverty, or disaster. In the past, the Emperor's Blessing has been used to repair the ravages of the Clan War, to restore the fallen Badger Clan, to restore hope when hope is lost.

The winner of this tournament will be allowed to determine what use the next Emperor's Blessing will be applied. The winner may choose to have the Blessing benefit his own clan, or to give the gift to another. A character from the winning faction will make powerful allies within the Miya, and influence the Blessing's fate in the storyline. The Blessing will then appear in as yet undetermined card form, as an effect that benefits both the winner of this tournament and the recipient.

If a Shadowlands player wins, a Lost hero will instead cause these ghosts to become fully corrupted by the Taint and hide them from detection for a time, gaining useful spies within the Emperor's very home.

Story Point: Dragon will claim a hostage from the Crab Clan.
Story Point: The hostage will be released peacefully.
Fiction: Soul of Darkness 1 2

Though the age of enlightenment has begun, the change it has brought Rokugan is hardly easy. Old hatreds boil between the clans, fanning the flames of war. As heroes rise and fall upon the battlefield, the fortunes of war cannot be predicted - though if you succeed, you might have the opportunity to alter these fortunes.

A character from the faction played by the winner of this tournament will claim a hostage from the second highest placing faction. This hostage will be an individual who, through various circumstances, has no choice but to throw himself upon the mercy of the winning faction.

The winning player will then decide whether this hostage will be released peacefully, ransomed back to his home clan for a great reward, or killed.

Fiction: Deception

Many Minor Clans have risen and fallen throughout the course of Rokugan's history. Some have fallen only to be born anew. Some have fallen to corruption, or been absorbed into Great Clans. Only one Minor Clan still lingers in memory that was destroyed utterly, leaving no descendants, no known legacy - the tragic Boar Clan, ruled by the now extinct Heichi Family.

Once they ruled the Twilight Mountains. They were smiths whose fine craftsmanship rivaled even the Kaiu Masters. It is said that Bloodspeaker machinations wiped out the Boar, and now only strange ghosts haunt the lonely mountains.

Yet nothing truly dies in Rokugan so long as it is remembered. Even now, bold heroes prepare to discover the Boar Clan's lost legacy.

The winner of this tournament will discover the lost mysteries of the Boar Clan. A new hero from his faction will enter the Twilight Mountains, face the ghosts that dwell there, discover the truth behind the Boar Clan's destruction, and return to his clan with his discovery. This new hero will appear as a future personality card, and the winner will be given input as to his or her name and abilities. What this hero discovers in the Twilight Mountains will also appear, as an item or holding that benefits his faction.

As the age of the Lotus begins, the Elemental Dragons have gathered to watch the Empire with interest. Most of the dragons are content to watch from afar, but one of them has chosen to directly influence this new age. This dragon will chose a new Oracle, who will return to the Empire as a member of the selected clan. The winning player may choose any of the following dragons, and the Oracle personality will embody the following philosophies:

The Fire Dragon - A creature of violence, but also of incredible insight. He who can master fire's rage will strike fear in his enemies.

The Air Dragon - He who sees what cannot be seen, subtle and clever. Though this dragon can be swift, it is also fickle.

The Earth Dragon - Solid, eternal, and patient. Though slow to act, this dragon possesses incredible power.

The Water Dragon - Enigmatic, changeable, and pervasive. This dragon is a creature of change, adapting to its situation.

The Void Dragon - Mysterious and wise, the Void Dragon combines aspects of every element. Though Void offers great flexibility, this dragon can be a demanding master.

The Shadow Dragon - If the winner of this tournament is playing a corrupt deck, he may choose any of the above dragons. The Oracle, however, will secretly be in league with the Shadow Dragon - the sinister corrupted brother of the mighty elemental dragons.

The new Oracle will be a new character. Though this character will be created by the L5R Story Team, the winner will be invited to share his input on the character's name, gender, and background.

In the wake of Rosoku's death, the Empire must struggle to rebuild their faith. The Ten Thousand Temples, most holy site of the Brotherhood, lies in ruins. Shoan, leader of the Brotherhood of Shinsei, was present during the Bloodspeaker attack and gave her life to save many of the junior acolytes. In the shadow of her heroism, a new leader must arise. In this new age, this age of heroes, a retired hero from ages past will be selected to lead the Brotherhood of Shinsei. The identity of this character will be determined by the faction that wins this tournament as follows:

Crab Clan - Hida Unari
Crane Clan - Daidoji Sembi
Dragon Clan - Hoshi Wayan
Lion Clan - Akodo Ginawa
Mantis Clan - Tsuruchi
Phoenix Clan - Shiba Tetsu
Scorpion Clan - Bayushi Tangen
Unicorn Clan - Otaku Baiken

If a Ratling or Shadowlands player wins, he will be allowed to choose any of the above personalities. If a Ratling player wins, the Nezumi shaman, K'mee, will be inducted into the Brotherhood of Shinsei. If a Shadowlands player wins, then the former leader of the Brotherhood, Shoan, will rise again as one of the undead, journey to the Shadowlands, and take her place as mistress of the Temple of the Ninth Kami.

Fiction: Ruins of Otosan Uchi I II III

The Ninube are among the strangest and most mysterious of Rokugan's villains. Once shadowy servants of the Lying Darkness, their current masters are unknown. At times, they seem to serve the Shadow Dragon. At others, they appear to work against its schemes. Are they merely pawns, or do they seek a more subtle goal? The factions that wins these four tournaments will all somehow factor into the Ninube's latest plot, a plot that might endanger all of Rokugan.

In each of these tournaments, the highest placing deck containing four or more Ninja cards, will be revealed to have been infiltrated by the Ninube, and be part of their plans. Whether or not each stage of their plan succeeds depends on whether a player using four or more Ninja cards also wins the tournament. If another player wins, that faction will stop that part of the Ninube's plan.

At this tournament, the Ninube will attempt to infiltrate the second highest placing faction.

Special Rules: The Scorpion Clan stand at the edge of shadow, and know how to fight it best. They are a possible exception to the above rules. A Scorpion player may use as many ninja cards as he likes without fear of Ninube infiltration - though if he wins the tournament he may *choose* to ally with them if he wishes.

The heir of Shinsei, the prophet Rosoku, has seen that in the times ahead the Empire will require wisdom. He has set a series of challenges before the people of Rokugan. These challenges will lead the worthiest souls in the Empire to step forward as the Keepers of the Elements. These men and women will embrace a great destiny, but theirs is not the greatest honor. There is one gift left that has not yet been discovered. The tasks performed to become a Keeper of the Elements were great indeed, but one shall emerge from the ranks of Rokugan's samurai and find a true path to enlightenment. This samurai shall become known as the Master of the Five Rings, and shall lead his clan to greatness the likes of which it has never known.

The winner of the Gencon Indy World Championship will declare one samurai from within their faction to become the Master of the Five Rings. Their clan shall be the first to bear the new Enlightened trait, and what that trait means will ultimately be determined by the winning faction. One clan might find enlightnement through the glory of battle. Another clan might find enlightenment through peaceful politics and diplomacy. Another yet might find it by embracing the secrets of magic. The guidelines for eligibility for this honor will be announced by the Story Team shortly before the tournament.

Yet the honor of becoming one of the Empire's spiritual leaders and earning a new Trait to strengthen one's faction in Lotus Edition are not Enlightenment's only rewards. The clan of enlightenment will bring about a new age, stepping to the forefront of their brethren, destined to accomplish many great things in the coming arc.

Some examples:

The Crab Clan do not believe in wasting away in a monastery, contemplating riddles. To the children of Hida, enlightenment is purity, and purity is a weapon against the Shadowlands. The Master of Five Rings and his disciples will form a new legion of warriors to march against the Horde, a deadly Legion of the Jade Hand that no oni or maho-tsukai can stand against.

The Crane Clan value understanding and empathy, and the Master of Five Rings shall achieve this like none other before him. A Crane Gencon winner may select a single clan other than the Shadowlands. From this clan, the Crane Champion will draw an allegiance so strong that these two clans will stand as allies throughout the Lotus story arc and possibly beyond.

The Dragon Clan will at last achieve that which they have sought for so many centuries: true enlightenment. With the Master of Five Rings' guidance, the Dragon Champion Togashi Satsu shall finally unlock the full power of his grandfather's spirit, becoming a Kami in all but birth.

The Lion Clan shall benefit greatly from the teachings of their Master of Five Rings. With new insight into battle, the Master shall pen the greatest treatise on battle tactics written in a thousand years, and his New Leadership will give rise to a new generation of tacticians with skills unlike any ever seen in the Empire.

The Mantis Clan craves power, wealth, and above all acceptance. The Master of Five Rings can achieve all these things, although his reasons for doing so are not what the Mantis expect. The Master's influence and teachings among the other clans shall result in the Mantis bieng awarded more mainland holdings, including the Empire's greatest port city, to be built upon the ruins of Otosan Uchi.

The Nezumi do not understand the human concept of enlightenment, but Rosoku's wisdom is not lost upon them. A Nezumi Master of Five Rings will unit his people and strengthen the One Tribe, leading them to retake their lost city deep in the Shadowlands and destroy the ancient Suiteiru no Oni that holds it.

The Phoenix Clan will use their wisdom to seek the ultimate truth behind the nature of magic, and use that truth in part to purify the Black Scrolls that remain in the Empire. The ancient power of these sacred spells will hearken back to the days of Isawa, and grant the Phoenix a power they have not known in a thousand years.

The Scorpion Clan understand that enlightenment is not simply a way of discovering the truth, but of hiding that truth from others. The Shadow Brands that once bound the Scorpion to the Lying Darkness are gone, but the Master of Five Rings shall create a new form of magic that replaces them, teaching his students the secrets of moving between the elements to find one's enemies and their hidden secrets.

The Unicorn Clan have always been regarded by strangers in their own homeland, outsiders who practice strange barbarian ways. To the Unicorn, this is merely something they accept, but if the Unicorn gain enlightenment, they will gain greater acceptance among their fellow clans. A temple to the Lords of Death will be constructed in the Imperial City. The defamed Shinjo family will win back some measure of their tarnished honor by being declared the Emerald Champion's foremost magistrates, bringing justice throughout the Empire.

And if the Shadowlands wins, then enlightenment will take a darker path. Enlightenment victories will not be possible at all, and the sinister prophets of the Shadowlands will seed their mad influence throughout the Empire.

One sinister individual will master the secrets of dark enlightenment and serve as an example to the rest, a corrupted Fortune who will rise into the Celestial Heavens and spread his tainted wisdom for the duration of the Lotus arc.

Should the Shadowlands prove victorious...

The Crab will find their resolve waning.

The Crane will find themselves without allies they can trust.

The Dragon will find that there are no answers to the riddles they have spent centuries contemplating.

The Lion will discover that there are some foes who cannot be defeated with steel.

The Mantis will find that they are insignificant in the grand scheme of the Celestial Order.

The Nezumi will realize that their enemies can never be defeated.

The Phoenix will see that there are powers they can never truly hope to master and remain sane.

The Scorpion will learn that they know nothing of the true secrets of the world.

The Unicorn will discover that their differences have set them apart from the world in a way they never imagined.

And the Shadowlands will discover that the Empire they have sought to destroy for over a thousand years can be defeated without violence.

Clan Pure/Tainted Win Corrupted Win Top Pure Deck in Dark Lotus
Crab The Crab embrace enlightenment through strength and purity of purpose. The Keeper of the Five Rings and his disciples will form a new legion of warriors to march against the Horde, a deadly Legion of the Jade Hand that no oni or maho-tsukai can stand against. Select Crab personalities in Lotus Edition will bear special traits indicating their membership in this Legion. For centuries the Oni Lord known as the Maw has been unable to enter Rokugan; his purified skull rests atop the gates of Kyuden Hida. The Keeper of the Five Rings will strike a bargain with dark powers and return the maw to Rokugan - as a slave of the Crab Clan. For the Crab, the price of failure is always steep. The Maw will escape his prison and destroy the Toritaka family and their lands. The Crab will break the uneasy peace with Daigotsu's followers, and savage war will consume the Crab. Most of the other clans will turn away, seeing the Crab's suffering as just punishment for their failure. The highest ranking Crab may select one clan who does not abandon the Crab.
Crane The Crane embrace enlightenment through the pursuit of perfection and unity. The winner of GenCon will select a single clan other than the Crane. The Keeper of the Five Rings will forge a powerful alliance between the Crane and this faction, and they will stand as allies throughout the Lotus arc. The Keeper of the Five Rings will use the Anvil of Despair to craft a new Bloodsword. This Bloodsword will be given to the Champion of another clan, of the winner's choice, placing him under the Keeper's command. For failing to protect the Empire's wisdom, the Crane will be cast out of the Emperor's courts. The highest ranking Crane player may select another clan to act as their go-between in the courts.
Dragon The Dragon do not pursue a single path to enlightenment, and each Dragon will approach this challenge in his own unique way. With the Keeper of Five Rings' guidance, the Dragon Champion Togashi Satsu shall finally unlock the full power of his grandfather's spirit, becoming a Kami in all but birth. This change will be embodied on a future version of Satsu's personality card. If the Dragon are responsible for Dark Lotus, they will conceal the Keeper's madness. The loss of enlightenment will be truly known only to the Dragon Clan and a select few. The age of the Dark Lotus will thus seem to be an age of hope and enlightenment, but this is a lie crafted by the Dragon to protect the Empire from despair. If the Dragon Clan fails to protect enlightenment, the Celestial Wanderer will become consumed with madness and rage. Lord Togashi Hoshi will return from the heavens with an army of ryu spirits, bent on punishing his clan for their foolishness. The highest ranking Dragon player may select one other faction, to whom the Dragon may turn for help against this invincible foe.
Lion The Lion embrace a tactical, strategic approach to enlightenment. For them, the pursuit of enlightenment and the way of the warrior are one and the same. The Keeper of the Five Rings will pen the greatest treatise on battle tactics in one thousand years, giving rise to a new generation of tacticians with skill and prowess unlike any seen before. This will result in several tacticians with the Enlightened trait as well as the appearance of the Keeper's text as an item card in a future expansion. The Keeper of the Five Rings will discover a means by which the Akodo family can harness their mysterious connection to the Lying Darkness, gaining bizarre and sinister new abilities. These abilities will be embodied on several future Lion Clan personalities. Failure is the most unseemly fate for a Lion. Many high ranking members of the Lion will fall upon their blades to cleanse their clan's name, but doubt in the Lion Clan's ability to defend the Empire will remain. The Lion will be despised and distrusted by all but a single clan, chosen by the highest ranking Lion.
Mantis The Mantis pursue enlightenment with the same brazen ambition that drives them in all else. The Keeper will seek to earn greater respect for his clan, and the Mantis will be awarded more inland holdings, including the former capital city of the Empire - Otosan Uchi. This claim will be represented in a future Mantis Clan stronghold. Already the Mantis have displayed their ability to command the strange serpentine spirits known as orochi. The Keeper will twist this magic, allowing the Mantis to control corrupted Orochi steeds of incredible power. The Keeper will ally himself with the former Mantis Champion, Yoritomo Kitao. For their failure, the Mantis Clan will be banished to their islands. The highest ranking Mantis may select one other clan - only in this clan's lands will the Mantis find welcome.
Phoenix The Phoenix pursue enlightenment as part of their eternal quest for knowledge, their endless pursuit of peace. A Phoenix Keeper seek the ultimate truth behind the nature of magic, and use that truth in part to purify the Black Scrolls that remain in the Empire, regaining the lost magic Isawa used to defeat a fallen god. The Keeper will explore the lost mysteries of the Phoenix Clan, and the old secrets of Isawa blood magic will be born anew. This will be represented by a new sort of maho, seductive new spells which the Phoenix will excel at using. If the Phoenix fail the Empire, the Elemental Council will be shattered, its members killed, driven to madness, or exiled from the Empire. One Master will remain, seeking refuge in the lands of a clan of the highest ranking Phoenix player's choice.
Nezumi The Nezumi have their own strange form of wisdom, and pursue enlightenment with the greedy curiosity that fires their people. The Nezumi tribes will be strengthened and unified by their new Keeper. He will lead the Nezumi into their lost city in the Shadowlands, to destroy the ancient Suiteiru no Oni that now holds it. The Keeper will unite the scattered Ratling tribes and use powerful name magic to revive the Shahismael, an ancient conqueror of the Naga race. With this Naga warlord and his allies, the Nezumi will wage war against the Empire. If the Nezumi fail the Empire, the Emperor will name the Ratlings as enemies of all mankind. They will be forced to flee or be slain to the last rat. The highest ranking Ratling player may select one clan within whose lands his people are still welcomed.
Scorpion The Scorpion pursue enlightenment for one simple reason - all secrets have value. If the Scorpion attain enlightenment, they shall keep it a secret. The Empire will believe that true enlightenment has been lost and that the age of the Dark Lotus has begun, but the Scorpion Keeper will gently guide the destiny of Rokugan from the shadows. The Keeper will discover the lost writings of Yogo Junzo and use their magic to enslave the tormented spirits of Traitor's Grove, compelling them to seek redemption. An army of undead traitors will march forth from the haunted forest, shackled to the Keeper's will. None know the price of failure as the Scorpion do, and none are quite so prepared for it. Should the Scorpion fail the Empire, they will neatly shift the blame to a clan of the highest ranking player's choice. The Scorpion Clan will earn a powerful enemy, but their status and honor will be maintained.
Shadowlands The idea of enlightenment is not entirely alien to the damned armies of the Lost. If the Shadowlands wins by an Enlightenment victory, then a fallen hero from the City of the Lost will step forward and prove his honor to the Empire. The Emperor will be forced to recognize the valor of the Lost. Though the threat of the Shadowlands will remain very real, Daigotsu's followers will make an uneasy truce with the Imperial Court, and the Keeper will be allowed in the Imperial City as a Shadowlands ambassador. The Keeper will embrace the power of the Shadowlands like none other. He will offer his soul to the Dark Kami, Fu Leng, and receive his blessings. At the Keeper's command, the ruined city of Otosan Uchi will become even more deeply suffused with evil power. The earth will yawn wide and the creatures of Jigoku will spill forth. A new Festering Pit will be created, and Rokugan will find itself surrounded by the Shadowlands on two sides. The Shadowlands cannot fail the Empire, for by definition they cannot play a Pure deck.
Unicorn The Unicorn are driven always to seek the next horizon, and for the children of the wind enlightenment is merely another horizon. The Keeper will demand respect and recognition for the Unicorn's unique culture and heritage. A temple to the Lords of Death will be constructed in the Imperial City and the defamed Shinjo Family will be declared the Emerald Champion's foremost magistrates, and several forthcoming personality cards will represent this. The Keeper will seek to bolster the strength of the Unicorn Clan by forging a secret alliance with the Kolat. With the surreptitious aid of the Ten Masters, the Khan's armies will become feared throughout the Empire. Several Unicorn bearing the Kolat trait will appear throughout Lotus Edition. The Unicorn will be reviled as gaijin barbarians and cast out of the Emperor's court. Angered that the Emperor would rather seek blame than seek a solution, the Khan will laugh in defiance and swear revenge. The Unicorn will maintain relations with a single clan of the highest ranking Unicorn player's choice.

Top of Clan Prizes:

For the Crab: Though the Crab Clan have promised to never again ally with the Shadowlands, the returned hero Hida Kisada has begun to realize that not all servants of the Shadowlands are without honor. As Fortune of Persistence, he can hear the prayers of the Lost and knows they have some sense of honor. The defeat of Iuchiban would not have been possible without the aid of Daigotsu's soldiers. Now a bold Lost bushi has dared approach Kisada, asking for a chance to prove his honor by allowing a handful of Daigotsu's corrupted troops to join the ranks of the Damned - crack Crab troops who bear the touch of the Shadowlands. Should Kisada agree to this arrangement?

Chosen: Yes

For the Crane: The Kakita Blade has long been viewed as a mark of excellence and perfection, even by the Crane Clan's most hated enemies. It is rare that one of these fine weapons is given as a gift to one outside the clan, and when such a gift is given it is invariably a favor that demands lifelong friendship between the clan and the recipient. Choose one of the following heroes to receive a Kakita Blade.

A) Ikoma Korin, Ikoma family daimyo.
B) Bayushi Paneki, Scorpion Clan Champion.
C) Kan'ok'ticheck, the Nezumi Chief of Chiefs.
D) Kaneka, the Shogun.

Chosen: B

For the Dragon: The enigmatic Dragon Clan prefer to watch events from afar and avoid involving themselves in politics. Yet Lord Togashi Satsu has noted the troubles that burden the Emperor and his brothers, and he has decided the time has come to offer one of Toturi's heirs the greatest gift the Dragon have to offer - one of the mystical tattoos of the ise zumi. Which of Toturi's sons should receive this gift?

A) Isawa Sezaru, the Voice of the Emperor.
B) Kaneka, the mighty Shogun.
Chosen: C

For the Lion: After their crushing defeat by the Khan's armies, the Lion Clan search for a way to prove their strength and redeem their standing in the eyes of the Empire. Recourse against the Unicorn Clan is inevitable, but for the moment they seek to prove their strength in another manner before engaging the Khan again. Which course of action should the Lion Clan Champion take?

A) Dispatch Lion soldiers to aid the Mantis Clan in their war against the Phoenix.
B) Dispatch Lion soldiers to aid the Phoenix in their war against the Mantis.
C) Attack the Dragon Clan in retribution for their interference during the War of the Rich Frog.
D) Attack the Scorpion Clan in retribution for their interference during the War of the Rich Frog.

Chosen: C

For the Mantis: Recently, the Mantis Clan earned the gratitude of the Ivory Kingdoms by rescuing their ambassador, Rama Singh, from house arrest in the Imperial City. In return, the Maharaja wishes to invite a member of the Mantis Clan to be trained among his honor guard. Should the Mantis Clan accept this gift? Should they, in return, invite the gaijin hero Rama Singh to attend the dojo of the Mantis Clan and take oaths as a Mantis samurai?

Chosen: Yes to both; Moshi Kekiesu is the selected representative.

For the Phoenix: Isawa Sezaru, the Voice of the Emperor, ranks among the most powerful shugenja in the Empire. The Elemental Council have realized that it would be beneficial if a marriage were arranged for Sezaru, but for the political opportunities and for Sezaru's own mental well-being. Which of the following individuals should be Sezaru's bride?

A) Isawa Ochiai, Phoenix Clan Master of Fire.
B) Soshi Angai, Scorpion Clan Kuroiban investigator.
C) Kuni Jiyuna, Crab Clan Jade Magistrate.
D) Asahina Nahomi, Crane Clan shugenja.

Chosen: B

For the Nezumi: The many scattered tribes now stand more united than ever before under the Chief of Chiefs, but the new One Tribe has no true home. Select any Great Clan. Kan'ok'ticheck will establish the Warrens of the One Tribe in the lands of that clan.

Chosen: Scorpion lands, in a sleeping Naga city in the Shinomen

For the Scorpion: The former Scorpion Clan Champion, Bayushi Sunetra, stepped down so that she might help the Emperor root out the hiding traitor, Bayushi Atsuki. Now that this deed is done, where should the Underhand turn her attention next?

A) Hunting the survivors of the Bloodspeaker cult in Phoenix lands.
B) Serving as the Emperor's hidden bodyguard.
C) Monitoring the Emperor's half-brother, Kaneka, the Shogun.

Chosen: C

For the Shadowlands: Though Iuchiban has fallen, the City of the Lost lies in ruins and Daigotsu's followers are not as strong as they once were. The Dark Lord has realized he must seek powerful allies. Fu Leng has chosen to aid his mortal champion by recalling an old servant from the depths of Jigoku and dispatching them to the City of the Lost to serve Daigotsu. Choose one of the following.

A) The Demon Bride of Fu Leng.
B) Moto Sada.
C) Tadaka no Oni.
D) Akuma no Oni.

Chosen: D

For the Unicorn: Now that they have proven their strength even against the Lion Clan, crushed the scattered servants of the Bloodspeaker cult, and helped the Shogun root out the former leaders of the Shadowed Tower, the Unicorn Clan is feared and respected throughout Rokugan. The Khan knows that such respect can be fleeting, of course, unless maintained. What will he do next?

A) Attack the Dragon Clan for their interference during the War of the Rich Frog.
B) Attack the Lion again, while they struggle to gather their strength and recover from their last battle with the Unicorn.
C) Stage a battle with the Scorpion Clan which the Unicorn will win, proving the Unicorn's strength and leading the rest of the Empire to underestimate the Scorpion.

Chosen: B

Participation Vote:

The descendant of Shinsei no longer guides Rokugan, having left the Keepers of the elemental books in his stead. But his Crow, the mysterious and legendary creature that once scouted the Shadowlands on Shinsei's behalf remains.

The Swiss vote is simple but profound. Vote on one of the five currently chosen Keepers, Kaiu Sugimoto (Earth), Mirumoto Masae (Air), Kakita Tsuken (Fire), Doji Jun'ai (Water), and Asahina Hira (Void). One of these characters will be chosen to have Shinsei's crow as their companion, and will benefit from this wise animal's steadfast service.

How will this affect the Keepers clan? What benefits will the Keeper gain? Has the Crow an agenda of his own? The Crow will be created as a unique and powerful follower in the Spring '06 set.

The Crow will be the eyes of the Keeper and will witness the victories and deaths of some of Rokugans greatest heroes at next years Kotei season.

In every qualifier anyone who does not receive an invitation to the World Championships will be able to cast their vote.

Qualifier Prizes:

One person from the Wednesday Qualifier who receives an invitation to participate in the World Championships will be named "The Master of Shadows". If that person wins the World Championships, they will be allowed to choose Lotus or Dark Lotus regardless of deck composition.

One person from the Thursday Qualifier who receives an invitation to participate in the World Championships will be named "The Master of the Empire". If that person wins the World Championships, they will be allowed to choose any other clans ramification for winning with the same category of deck (corrupt or pure).

ie. If you achieve Dark Lotus you can share any other clans ramification for winning Dark Lotus, if you achieve Lotus you can share any other clans ramification for winning Lotus.

One person from the Friday Qualifier who receives an invitation to participate in the World Championships will be named "The Master of Rokugan". If that person wins the World Championships, they will have the story team choose someone from their deck who will become experienced and will become a promo.

The City of Remembrance had seen much tragedy in its history. Large sections of the city still lay in ruins following the Rain of Blood. With the Phoenix Clan's escalating war against the Mantis, repair on many of these buildings had been delayed in favor of constructing more barracks and fortifications along the city's coast. Grim Shiba samurai patrolled the streets at all hours, vigilant for any sign of impending attack. Their presence had cast a pall over an already melancholy milieu.

Yet in the Temple of the Seven Dragons, Agasha Miyoshi's thoughts dwelled only upon her magic. The slight young shugenja knelt before an image of the seven Elemental Dragons, head thrown back in rapture at her communion with their power. In seeking to protect their city from tragedies like the Rain of Blood, the shugenja who dwelled here discovered the city bore a profound and unexplained connection to the power of the Elemental Dragons. Miyoshi, and a handful of others like her, found that so long as they honored and respected the dragons they could draw upon some measure of that power as they drew upon the minor kami spirits to weave other spells.

Miyoshi's breath caught in her throat as images of the Elemental Dragons appeared unbidden through her mind.

The Dragon of Air wove sinuously through the smoking incense of the temple. He sought secrets and shared wisdom, cheerfully guiding heroes to their destiny.

The Dragon of Fire flickered in the light of the candles all around her. Miyoshi saw him only indirectly, for a mortal could not peer into his savage flames and be unchanged.

The Dragon of Water appeared in the ripples of the small pools to either side of Miyoshi. Its scales shone with a thousand colors, but it did not look upon Miyoshi. The Water Dragon had little interest in mortal affairs; it only appeared here for the sake of its brethren.

The Dragon of Earth s power reverberated in the stones beneath the kneeling shugenja. The oldest and wisest of the dragons, it seemed to watch Miyoshi with infinite patience, judging the very core of her being.

The Dragon of Thunder roared deep within Miyoshi's soul. It was a creature wrought of courage and honor. Miyoshi prayed that its blessings would remain with her.

The Celestial Dragon's power was a faint and distant thing, like a distant echo. Though its eyes were ever upon the mortal realm, it remained forever apart. The Celestial Dragon bore all the heavens upon its broad back, and could not shirk that duty to dabble with humans.

The Dragon of the Void could not be seen, but Miyoshi felt it within all of the elements as well as within herself. It watched with a curious, almost mischievous eye. It seemed to be waiting for something. What that might be, she could not imagine.

Miyoshi's eyes opened and she caught her breath with a gasp as she realized the truth.

Where once there had been only seven, now there were eight.

***

Seven Elemental Dragons have watched over Rokugan, each in their own right, for all of time. An eighth true dragon prepares to step forth into existence. Unlike the other dragons, who were born and dwell in the Celestial Heavens, this dragon will come into its true power in Rokugan.

The faction reporting the most wins during this tournament will witness the birth of the Eighth Dragon. A hero from that faction will participate in the dragon's ascension, and the faction will receive some token of this new celestial being's power in a future expansion.

The young prince whose life the original Yotsu saved went on to become the vessel of Fu Leng. Yotsu's own son became Goju Kyoden, the Obsidian Champion who restored Daigotsu to life. Their home in the city of Otosan Uchi was destroyed despite their best efforts to save it, and now even their last dojo stands ravaged in the wake of Iuchiban's return.

But the tale of the Yotsu is one of courage and perseverance. Though they have not abandoned their fight to reclaim the fallen capital's ruins, Yotsu Seou has accepted that the school's dojo must be moved elsewhere.

The faction played by the winner of this tournament will determine where the new Yotsu dojo will be built. That clan will allow a Yotsu to learn their techniques as a gesture of friendship and good faith. If the Nezumi win, the Yotsu will build a hidden dojo in the Nezumi warrens beneath Otosan Uchi, and a Nezumi will take the Yotsu name. If the Shadowlands win, there will be no dojo. A Blood Hunt has consumed the Empire, and in its wake the foul cultists who once served the madman Iuchiban have fled to the shadows whence they came. In this time of victory, many dark and terrible things long thought lost have risen to the light. Among these is an artifact of legend, a thing spoken of only in fearful whispers.

The Anvil of Despair.

Long believed lost or destroyed, its location is known only to a few. These forsaken souls already search for the anvil, but during the Emperor's Blood Hunt, the paths of these seekers and the Imperial Legions will cross.

The faction played by the winner of this tournament will recover the Anvil of Despair, but they will also discover a fearful truth. The Anvil cannot be destroyed, and any attempt to do so invariably brings destruction down upon those who try.

If the winner's deck is corrupt or Tainted, then the winning faction will continue to use the Anvil of Despair, producing powerful Tainted weapons for the use if their bushi. If the winning deck is pure, then the winning faction will find a way to counter this, the darkest of all Yajinden's creations. The Anvil will be purified, becoming the Anvil of Courage, and will be used to craft weapons that rival the legendary Bloodswords - weapons of honor and courage rather than corruption.

Eight Great Clans rule the Empire of Rokugan, but these are not all the samurai who serve the Emperor. There are eight Minor Clans as well, each fulfilling a specific purpose in the Celestial Order. All but two of these Minor Clans have family names, the Ox, founded by the cruel and ambitious Morito, and the Monkey, founded by the legendary hero, Toku. Perhaps no two clans exist that are more different from one another, but both serve the Emperor in their own manner.

In recognition of the heroic Toku, the Monkey will soon be rewarded the Toku family name. Wary of neglecting one Minor Clan where the others all have been shown favor, the Emperor has decreed that the Ox will also be granted the Morito name. Before these clans may do so, however, tradition must be upheld. These clans must name a Great Clan sponsor in the Imperial Court to officially present their glorious deeds before the Emperor. Such an act will forge bonds of loyalty between these clans that will endure for ages to come.

The winner of this Challenge Booth will be allowed to decide which of these clans will become his ally. The Monkey serve as the Emperor's magistrates, noble and heroic defenders of bushido. The Ox clan are mysterious and unpredictable mercenaries, cunning horseman who guard their secrets well. The second highest placing Great Clan will sponsor the remaining clan, Ox or Monkey.

If Shadowlands or Nezumi win, the winner still chooses a clan for his faction to forge a secret alliance with, but they are instead sponsored by the highest placing Great Clan (in which case the highest placing Great Clan sponsors both clans).

The character with the greatest amount of "Fated to Die" votes will die in an upcoming Imperial Herald Fiction - with one important exception. The character with the greatest amount of "Fated to Live" votes will appear in the same fiction (though they will survive).

Here are your choices:

1) Hida Reiha, Lady of the Crab (Crab Clan)

Fire, Water, Earth, and Air. Void is all of these, and yet it is nothing. It is the balance between all things, the discord of perfect harmony and the pure balance of raw chaos. Those who seek to understand the void are changed by it instead; mastery of this element is the most sublime and dangerous of all mysteries. Shinsei's challenges end here, and appropriately they begin here as well. The Book of the Void offers its Keeper nothing, yet the Keeper of the Void is master of all.

The Trial of Void is simple: the sage who can perform a task greater than these four things combined shall keep the Book of the Void.

Will you accept this challenge?

And as these five challenges come to an end, the Keepers of the Five Rings realize this is only the beginning.

The end of the Bloodspeakers is nigh. The Voice of the Emperor and his servants have uncovered information revealing the locations of every major Bloodspeaker cell throughout Rokugan, and now the Legions of the Empire move to crush the threat they pose forever.

Each tournament this Kotei season will represent a city, village, or other important location throughout the Empire where these conflicts will take place. The faction that wins the tournament will also be the clan that leads the attack, striking out against the Bloodspeakers. The Legions are composed of heroes of every clan, so it is very likely that a clan might be responsible for saving a location very distant from its homelands. If the Ratlings win, then Nezumi heroes will aid the Legions in the battle in that location.

Any Tainted (three or less Shadowlands or maho cards) or Corrupted (Four or more Shadowlands cards or the Dark Heart of the Empire) will indicate that the leaders of the cult escaped unscathed. If the Shadowlands Horde should win a tournament, then Daigotsu's followers will claim Iuchiban's followers and drag them to the Shadowlands to face justice.

The tale of these victories shall be told in a way unlike any other in the history of Rokugan. The Story Team shall send the tales of this Kotei season personally to each of the winners, and no one else. It shall fall to these winners, the true heroes of the Empire, to share the tales of their victory with their fellows or keep them forever secret.

But even as the Bloodspeaker threat falls, new conspiracies threaten to change the face of the Empire. The Shogun has seen this crusade as an unparalleled opportunity to prove his might and valor, and has dispatched his own soldiers to aid the legions in their crusade. The Emperor has already fallen prey to Gozoku machinations, the people's unquestioned loyalty to him filled with doubt. Kaneka sees this as his chance not only to gain the favor his brother has foolishly lost, but to earn the power and respect that will allow him to control the Gozoku as they would seek to control him. Likewise, the Emperor's followers see these battles as a chance to renew the people of Rokugan's faith in their ruler.

Yet even this is not all. Rokugan stands poised at a crossroads and two possible paths lay ahead - an age of enlightenment or an age of darkness. The Keepers of the Books of Enlightenment will either herald the course of this new age or act as the last light of hope when enlightenment becomes lost. When the last Keeper is chosen, a temple will be built dedicated to their enlightened wisdom. The city represented by Kotei tournament that boasts the largest number of enlightenment victories will become the home of the Temple of the Keepers.

The choice comes down to you. If you win a Kotei this season, you will be allowed to choose to support either the Shogun or the Emperor. Whoever you support shall gain glory for saving that part of Rokugan, and their support will be increased.

One battle ends now, but the lines of a new war are about to be drawn.

Participation Vote
The Blood Hunt will soon be at an end, the threat of the Bloodspeakers a faint shadow of memory. As their corruption passes, so will the Fortunes renew their favor upon the Empire. Everyone who plays in the last round fo swiss and does not make the cut will be able to choose one of the following Seven Fortunes. This deity will receive a personality card in a future expansion (much like Hida Osano-Wo once did).

A) Benten, Fortune of Love
B) Bishamon, Fortune of Strength
C) Daikoku, Fortune of Wealth
D) Ebisu, Fortune of Honest Work
E) Fukurokujin, Fortune of Wisdom
F) Hotei, Fortune of Contentment
G) Jurojin, Fortune of Longevity

Years ago, the tattooed madman Kokujin forged the Shameswords, successors to the Bloodswords, on the Anvil of Despair. Ten of these swords were crafted, and distributed throughout the Empire. Two of these have shown up, in the hands of Hiruma Todori and Asako Tsuruko. Over one year ago, a series of mysterious fires erupted in the Imperial City of Toshi Ranbo, ravaging a lightly populated quarter of the growing city. Daidoji investigators later learned that the catastrophe was only a shadow of what could have occurred - barrels of explosive powder were found stowed beneath the Emperor s home, undisturbed by the fire. Though there are many who have pursued the truth, and some have already discovered clues that hint at what truly happened. Now a long time has passed, and some have begun to wonder if this mystery will ever be truly revealed.

This two part tournament will reveal the truth of what occurred on that day. Two heroes will discover the truth. A hero hailing from the faction that wins the European tourney will discover the critical clues that reveal the culprits behind this attack on the Emperor s home. A hero hailing from the faction that wins the Guatemalan tourney will bring the culprits to justice. If the Shadowlands should win either event, then a hero from the second place faction (excluding Nezumi) will instead be chosen - but this hero will secretly bear the Shadowlands Taint.

It has been some time since Matsu Nimuro, Lion Clan Champion, took up the Egg of P'an Ku and used its magic to create a perfect twin of himself. Unfortunately Nimuro could not predict how his creation would react to its new existence, or that it would assume his position and cast him into imprisonment. Now the creature known as Tamago is dead, slain in the War of the Rich Frog. A new Lion Champion reigns, but this tale is not yet done. What drove Tamago to act as he did? What will become of the true Matsu Nimuro?

The winner of this tournament will determine the truth. The winner will be allowed to choose one of the following fates:

- Matsu Nimuro survives, escapes, and swears fealty to the new Lion Champion.

- Matsu Nimuro survives, but casts his name aside and becomes a ronin.

- Matsu Nimuro survives, confesses his crimes, and becomes a Deathseeker to atone for his mistakes.

- Matsu Nimuro dies.

In any of these scenarios, the faction played by the winner will have an instrumental role in the story that results. If Nimuro survives, he will be indebted to the winning faction. If Nimuro dies, only the winning faction will know the truth of Tamago's origins.

The Ruby of Iuchiban is an ancient and powerful artifact, crafted by the foul artifice of Yajinden himself. It is a weapon used to steal and store the souls of others, imprisoning them in a world of eternal pain. As the enemies of the Bloodspeaker gather for final battle, Iuchiban holds such weapons close. In the conflict to come, one will claim this ruby.

A character from the faction played by the winner of this tournament will claim the Ruby of Iuchiban. If the winner's deck is neither Tainted or Corrupted (no Shadowlands stronghold, Shadowlands cards, maho cards, or Black Heart of the Empire Wind), then the Ruby will be purified and become a tool for good.

And when the Ruby is discovered, a secret will be discovered as well. The hero who uncovers the ruby will find that a soul is already trapped within. This soul will be a new character from the faction that places second in the tournament. The winner may choose to release this soul, gaining a powerful ally, or leave their soul within the ruby, making them their slave.

It is said that the soul of a samurai lies within his daisho, the swords that are both his symbol of office and his most fearsome weapons. After a samurai dies, some hint of his legacy lives on within his blades, and the swords of the Empire's greatest heroes are often sought after by those who follow. Yet sometimes the blades of great heroes are sadly lost, and cannot live on to greater glories.

The faction played by the winner of this tournament will discover the swords of a lost hero, and these swords will be wielded by a member of the new generation of samurai. The winner of this faction will be allowed to choose a currently existing, Diamond-Legal character to be the recipient of these blades, pending approval by the Story Team. The winner should contact Rich Wulf to determine the details.

The swords that will be found are as follows:

Crab Clan - The daisho of Hida Atarasi, Crab Clan Thunder.
Crane Clan - The swords of Daidoji Rekai, fallen lady of the Daidoji.
Dragon Clan - The blades the Dragon Thunder, Mirumoto, carried into the Shadowlands.
Lion Clan - The daisho of the revered Akodo Kage, who vanished in the Clan Wars.
Mantis Clan - The swords of Yoshitsune, father of Yoritomo.
Phoenix Clan - The blades of Isawa Tsuke, fallen Master of Fire.
Scorpion Clan - The daisho of Bayushi Aramoro, lost at Oblivion's Gate.
Shadowlands - The swords of Mutsuhito, the first human follower of Fu Leng.
Unicorn - The daisho of Otaku, Unicorn Thunder.
Nezumi - Any one of the above, but discovered and wielded by a Nezumi hero.

The Splendid Emperor, Toturi I, remains one of the most beloved and respected heroes in recent history. It was not always so, especially early in his career when he was forced into the life of an outcast ronin. At the Battle of Beiden Pass, his fortune began to take a turn. It was here that he began to gather heroes who valued the future of the Empire above petty clan rivalries. It was here that the banner of the Wolf first flew above what would be known as Toturi's Army.

The first such banner, a simple thing hastily painted upon a scrap of cloth, was thought lost during the Battle of Beiden Pass. In recent days, a scout exploring the ruins of the collapsed pass discovered a shadowed cave. Within that cave this simple man found the bodies of several ronin samurai, hounded there long ago by the Crab's demonic allies. One still sat upright, clutching the banner of the Wolf banner in now skeletal hands. Realizing the value of what he had discovered, the scout immediately recovered the banner and gave it to his superiors.

The faction that wins this tournament shall be the one to recover the Banner of the Wolf. The leader of this faction will, in turn, give it to whichever of Toturi's heirs he finds most deserving, Toturi Naseru (the Emperor), Kaneka (the Shogun), or Isawa Sezaru (the Voice). The choice the winner makes will have an important bearing on future alliances between his clan and Toturi's heirs.

Within the dusty halls of this castle they shall learn of why it was built and how it was lost. The Kami who constructed this place shall be the founder of that clan, or Fu Leng in the case of the Shadowlands. The return of the Bloodspeakers has brought dark times for the Empire, but some would say the true threat is only just beginning. The Gozoku conspiracy, a consortium of agents who believe the Emperor is better left as a figurehead, have undermined Toturi III's power. The Shogun now stands as their most powerful representative, but does the Gozoku truly control him? Though none can say what might happen next, an inevitable conflict is obvious, and unlike the war against the Bloodspeakers, in this conflict none can say who the enemy truly is.

Yet the Gozoku is not new, and there are those who remember well the last time they attempted to usurp the Emperor's rule. An agent of the insidious Kolat possesses knowledge that may be used against these conspirators. This agent will offer his information to a member of the faction that wins this tournament, leaving the winner to decide what to do with it.

If the winner trusts the information he will root out an important Gozoku sympathizer, but his faction will be indebted to the Kolat.

If the winner presents this information to the Gozoku, they will in turn eliminate the Kolat Agent, and the winning faction will gain Gozoku allies.

Or the winner may instead report the Kolat to the Emperor's authorities, but to act so publicly will give the Gozoku agent time to escape suspicion for being involved in the conspiracy.

The Topaz Championship is the gempukku tournament held every year and overseen by the Emperor himself. Only the best and brightest of the samurai caste are invited to perform their rite of passage in front of the most powerful nobles in Rokugan, and to do well in such a competition is often the first step to glory and fame throughout the young samurai's career. The winner of this tournament is deemed the "Topaz Champion" for the year, a position with no real authority but great prestige. Former Topaz Champions have been fawned upon by all the Clans in order to both get into the Emperor's good graces and earn the friendship of a samurai who will perhaps one day be one of Rokugan's celebrated heroes. Recent Topaz Champions include such revered samurai as Mirumoto Uso, Moto Najmudin, and Doji Domotai.
