The war that escalates between Crab and Crane has drawn the notice of darker forces. Though the Crab maintain their vigil upon the Wall, they are distracted. The Crane do not realize the dangers that lie in the shadows of the Crab provinces. The Shadowlands Horde shall strike at the weaker of these two clans, burning one of their great palaces to the ground.

The enlightened prophets of the Dragon hold the secrets of the future, while the Scorpion have mastered the shadowed secrets of the past. The Lord of the Shadowlands finds the alliance between these two clans distasteful, and seeks to drive a wedge between them. The clan with better performance, Scorpion or Dragon, shall be gifted with a terrible revelation about it's ally. Despite its Tainted source this secret will raise questions too terrile to be ignored. Knowledge is power. This secret, if used, will bring great power to the clan that wields it.

When Fu Leng was defeated, it is said, the Twelve Black Scrolls were destroyed. Their foul magic plagues Rokugan no more. However, Moto Chagatai's spies have intercepted information indicating that the Phoenix may have preserved one of the Scrolls for study. Chagatai knows the danger of this magic, and is too wise to allow the scroll to be used directly. His shugenja yet believe that the scroll would be a valuable object of study, and that much could be learned of Isawa's original pure blood magic now that Fu Leng's soul no longer inhabits the Scrolls. If the Unicorn triumphs over the Phoenix, the Iuchi shall appropriate this Black Scroll for their own study. If the Phoenix triumph, they will continue to protect this dangerous artifact.

In the Seikitsu Mountains near the lands of the Unicorn, the Horde and the Lion clash. The Tsuno have discovered a blade that can only be the sword of Akodo himself. His tomb cannot be far distant. The Lion will not allow their enemies to desecrate the resting place of their Kami founder. The Tsuno have sworn that they will find Akodo's remains and return them to their Dark Lord. The faction with a stronger performance, Shadowlands or Lion, will find Akodo's grave first.

Miya Gensaiken, a corrupted shape-shifter, watches Toturi Sezaru in anonymity, waiting for a chance to corrupt the Wolf. If the number of corrupted decks supporting Sezaru exceeds the amount of uncorrupted decks, Gensaiken will find the opportunity he needs to steer the Wolf down the path of destruction. (For the purposes of this tournament, four or more cards is considered a corrupted deck.)

The Dark Oracle of Water watches over the great armies of the Unicorn and Lion; one clan prepares to defend the Empire; the other prepares to shake it to its foundation. The Dark Oracle has not yet decided who he favors in the battle to come... but the clan who succeeds shall receive the Oracle's gift to do with as they will.

In the deep Shadowlands, a strike-force of Crab and Ratling have discovered a threat unlike any that has been seen in recent memory. If these combined factions can defeat the Shadowlands, they will escape to bring news of this threat to Rokugan. If the Shadowlands triumph, there will be no escape.

The Dragon and Phoenix continue their struggle in the northern lands. The clan with a stronger performance will gain the aid of a previously neutral Minor Clan.

The power of the Scorpion Clan dominates the court, a domain once ruled by the Crane. However, the Crane are not to be underestimated. The clan with a greater amount of success between these two will arrange a marriage for one of the Four Winds.

The clan with the least representation in the tournaments will hear the siren song of the Shadowlands... as one of their family daimyo is drawn into the darkness.

A Perfect Cut Boxtopper Tourney: Battle for Black Crane Castle
Story Effects:
Story Point: Black Crane Castle is controlled exclusively by the Crab
Story Point: The Phoenix will find themselves in debt to the Crab or the Crane
Card: The Yasuki Palaces

Over seven years ago, the Yasuki family were expelled from the Crane Clan for their underhanded criminal activities. When the Crab adopted the Yasuki and used their mercantile expertise to undermine the economic power of the Crane, Rokugan exploded into its first great civil war. Though the conflict was ended by Imperial edict, both sides have longed for the day they might settle the score.

That day has come.

The last Crab Yasuki daimyo has died, and leadership of the family has been traced to a Crane. The Crane Clan fights for their honor; these lands are rightfully theirs. The Crab fight for loyalty. After seven centuries, the Crab refuse to surrender the Yasuki name. The Yasuki themselves are trapped between extremes.

The time has come to decide who will possess the lands of the Yasuki.

Which side will you choose?

The Clan that wins the Battle at Black Crane Castle event will gain one special favor from either the Crane or the Crab, depending on who they supported the most often.

If the Crane get supported more often than the Crab, the stronghold becomes exclusively Crane, and if the Crab get supported more often, the Yasuki Stronghold becomes exclusively Crab.

The Clan that participates the fewest number of times will find themselves in debt to either the Crane or the Crab.

Open war has erupted between the Crab and Crane as they battle to see which clan truly deserves the Yasuki name. The Unicorn have been allies of both clans in the past, and now stand in indecision, helping neither. If the Crab win, their Shinjo allies will arrive in force to help turn the tide. If the Crane win, their allies in the court convince the Ide to turn the Unicorn's attention away from the conflict.

Though they are neighbors, the Unicorn have had only rare dealings with the Clan of the Dragon. The Clan of the Phoenix have been allies in the past, but they seem much changed of late. More distant. More arrogant. The Unicorn and their allies in the Ox are watching these two clans carefully. The stronger of these two groups could prove a welcome ally or a worthy foe.

In Ryoko Owari, the Scorpion's presence has weakened. As the masked warriors of the Bayushi family scour their provinces to search for the killer of the Emperor, their military presence in the City of Lies is greatly diminished. Ryoko Owari is a rich city, second only to the capital itself. With speed and cunning the Unicorn could snatch Ryoko Owari from the clutches of the Scorpion...but they must defeat the Scorpion first.

On the fields near the Kitsu Tombs, the Lion face a strange new threat. The monstrous Tsuno, beasts from the Shadowlands unlike any seen before. Unicorn scouts skirt the edge of the battle, but have not yet involved themselves in the conflict until more can be learned about this new foe. If the Lion demonstrate greater valor than their Shadowlands foes, the Unicorn and Lion together will discover the true nature of these Tsuno. If the Shadowlands defeat the Lion, however, the clever spies of the Unicorn will press their advantage and steal away a few of the Kitsu's secrets.

These are interesting times indeed for the Unicorn, but there are more great events transpiring in the Empire than even the might Khan can monitor....Toturi Tsudao , leader of the Emerald Legion and daughter of Toturi, stands beside the Lion against the armies of the Tsuno. The clan with the greatest representation in the tournaments will see one of their number promoted to general of the Imperial Legions for assisting Tsudao in her time of need.

Hantei Naseru has agreed to end the Crane and Lion's long feud over Violence Behind Courtliness City. The Clan with more wins - Lion or Crane - gains control of the city.

The Dragon and The Phoenix both consider themselves masters of magic, and of late they have become bitter enemies as well. As son of the Emperor and a shugenja, the favor of Toturi Sezaru would do much to support either clan's claim. Whichever clan, Dragon or Phoenix, has a larger number of wins gains the Wolf's favor.

In the lands of the Crab, the Hiruma are suddenly besieged by an army of Oni, the likes of which have not been seen in decades. A scout force of Crabs and Ratlings are sent south to investigate. If the Crabs and Ratlings can defeat the Shadowlands, they can defuse this new threat before it grows worse. If the Shadowlands Horde succeeds....pray that the Horde does not succeed.

And as for the clan of the Scorpion? Their victory lies in the failure of their enemies. The clan with the least representation in the tournament will find itself at the mercy of the Scorpion... if such can be called "mercy."

Off the coast of Rokugan lies an island. Lush and verdant, it is rich in abundant food and resources yet to be despoiled by the hands of the Empire. Though only a few miles from the mainland, it has been well concealed by the shallow reefs and terrible storms that ravage the area. Until this day, the only ship that has visited the island and survived was that of the legendary Yasuki Fomoki.

Among the Crab, Fomoki is remembered as a hero, a gallant patriot and skilled sailor. Among the Crane, he is remembered as a criminal, a pirate who looted or sank over a hundred vessels during his career. The island they discovered has no name. The pirate captain and his crew simply called it the "Island in the Mist." They used it as a safe haven, a place to secure the ill-gotten goods accumulated in their adventures. Far from the grasp of the Imperial Legions, they thought the island safe from harm.

They were wrong.

Off the coast of the Island in the Mist, Fomoki's ship was attacked by the King of Orochi, a great serpentine beast from the depths of the sea. Fomoki was seen leaping into the creature's maw with his sword drawn, and then was seen no more. His crew fled for the mainland and never returned.

The members of Fomoki's crew, conscripted into the navy of the Crab, were unable to return to the island to secure the treasures they abandoned there. A single tattered scrap of wooden deck planking bears a roughly carved map to the island. Even this was thought lost long ago.

Now it waits to be found.

Note: The top Unicorn player conceded to the second place dragon

In thirty years, much has happened in Rokugan, but much has gone undone as well. There are many tales left untold, and many heroes whose destinies lie unfulfilled.

They call to you now.

In the Crab, an ancient warrior remembers the day his courage faltered, and wanders what might have happened if things had been different.

In the Crane, one man remembers a time when men stood unified, and wonders if such a thing could happen again.

In the Dragon, a great hero waits amid the mountain peaks, wondering when the time of his legendary destiny will come to pass.

In the Lion, an old man may hold the the secret of the greatest threat to his clan.

In the Phoenix, a lost soul wanders with fragmented memories of the past and future, looking for a way home.

Amid the tribes of the Nezumi, a lone scout seeks the souls consumed by the Lying Darkness, determined to save them before his own Name passes into tomorrow.

In the Scorpion, an aged general grits his teeth over the way he was played in his youth; with nothing left to lose he plots his vengeance against a foe he cannot defeat.

In the Shadowlands, a master of dark magic slowly recovers from his painful defeat, sworn to return stronger than ever or die once and for all.

And in the clan of the Unicorn, a powerful shugenja has determined not to stand aside while Chagatai's great armies prepare for war.

Step forward and be counted for your clan. The clan that wins will see their hero return from retirement to fulfill their destiny.

A brief story will be read at the conclusion of the touranment itself, to be followed at a later time with the conclusion of the respective character's story in an online fiction.

"Sunset Tower," Sezaru said in reply. "They say even when the Shadow descended, the Seppun and Kasuga who stood watch in this place never wavered, never surrendered... and what did it earn them? They did not leave so much as a corpse to mark their passing. Only... rubble." Sezaru gestured at the wreckage. "What did their precious courage earn them? Their duty? Their honor? Their sacrifice meant nothing... Just as my father's death meant nothing... and my mother..." Sezaru trailed off, fingers scraping the rubble as his hand dropped limply to his side. He stared blankly toward the sea, lost in his own strange reverie.

The sound of heavy footfalls drew Hantei Naseru's attention from his calligraphy. He could hear the protesting squeals of his servants, begging the visitor to pause and remove their sandals before charging through Naseru's home. The Anvil smiled, almost imperceptibly. Only one person in Rokugan would enter his home in so bold a manner. He knew her even before the shoji screen slammed to open.

"Hello, sister," he said, setting his brush aside and rising from his low table.

Toturi Tsudao entered the room. Her armor was soiled and travel-worn. A deep gash marked her forehead. She looked as if she had come directly from a battlefield. "Naseru," she said, bowing curtly to her brother. "We must talk."

"Indeed," Naseru replied. His eyes narrowed in concern. " I am more than willing to hear your words, Tsudao-chan, but if you would prefer to bathe and relax first, consider my home your own. I shall wait here to attend you."

"I appreciate the hospitality, little brother, but I have no time," she replied.

Naseru frowned. "Is there some emergency, sister? My eyes outside the capitol have reported no notable crises. Or is it the Bloodspeakers again?"

"Yes," Tsudao nodded. "My Legions have overturned three cells of the cult in as many months. We found the latest only today, in North Hub Village.

"In sight of Otosan Uchi?" Naseru sneered. "They dare practice their art in the vicinity of the Imperial City? Blasphemous."

"Their activity seems to be on the rise," Tsudao nodded.

"What of the Kuni Witch Hunters?" Naseru asked. "The Inquisitors? It is their duty to deal with such matters. Why bring this matter to my attention?"

"The Kuni are too disorganized," Tsudao replied. "Their new daimyo, Kiyoshi, does his best to lead them but he is too inexperienced. A third of them are consumed with their quest for vengeance for Utagu's death. Another third are occupied in the Crab's war with the Crane. Many of the Asako Inquisitors have become similarly embroiled in their clan's war against the Dragon. There are many still willing to do their duty to the Empire, but not enough. Not enough by far, and the shadows seem to be growing."

"Then they must be reminded where their duty lies," Naseru said curtly.

"Which is why I have come to you, brother," Tsudao said. "Rokugan needs a new Jade Champion."

Naseru chuckled. "And you think such a thing is within my power?" he asked. "I was only allowed to hold the Test of the Emerald Champion because of our father's sanction, sister. You know that. I have many allies, but just as many enemies. Were I to call a tournament, there are many who would refuse to appear if only to spite me."

"Which is why I have already spoken to Kaneka and Sezaru," Tsudao said. "There are not many in Rokugan who would oppose all four heirs."

Naseru's eyebrow rose, but only slightly. "You met with the others already?"

Tsudao grinned. It was not often her brother displayed surprise so openly. "Perhaps you need to pay your spies more, little brother?" she asked.

"Perhaps," he nodded. "What did the others say?"

"Kaneka was eager to agree," she said. "One of the other cult cells was discovered in Lion lands. He destroyed it personally, with only a handful of Akodo to support him."

Naseru shrugged. "I'm overjoyed to hear of our half-brother's heroic exploits," he said in a disinterested tone. "And Sezaru?" he asked, his tone more sincerely concerned.

"Sezaru was trained by the Isawa," Tsudao replied. "He remains unconvinced there is a need for a Jade Champion, but he said he would not oppose the idea."

"Neither will I," Naseru said. "If your Legionnaires will be so kind as to spread the word, I shall begin putting plans into motion to organize the tournament this very hour. Is that acceptable, Tsudao-chan?"

"That sounds perfect, little brother," Tsudao said.

Naseru nodded and seated himself at his low table once more. He put aside his calligraphy and drew out a fresh piece of parchment upon which he could begin drafting orders. He began writing immediately, paying no more attention to his sister. It was clear from his manner that he considered their meeting concluded.

"You know, little brother, if the four of us were to work together more often, perhaps the Empire would be a more peaceful place," she said.

Naseru peered up at her, his expression unreadable. "Your idealism is refreshing, Tsudao-chan, but it is not realistic," he said. He continued writing as he spoke, his practiced hands tracing perfect characters even without his focused attention. "The Empire needs strength, not consensus rule. A strong Emperor would be preventing problems such as these Bloodspeakers, not reacting to them. In the end, only one of us can rule. You know that Sezaru knows this as well. As for our bastard brother, Kaneka, his opinions are not my concern."

Tsudao sighed. "An argument for another time, little brother," she said, brushing aside the subject. She knew well how eagerly Naseru leapt into a debate if not quickly headed off. "We must think of the Empire. The Empire needs a new Jade Champion."

***

"And so the Empire shall have one," said a dark voice. A tall figure watched the exchange between the two Winds through images rippling a pool of blood, many miles away. The grim half-light of the Shadowlands reflected from multiple sharpened horns protruding from the figure's forehead. It smiled an eery, mirthless smile.

"A new Jade Champion shall reign," it mused. "Ever do they fail to learn... Ever do they fail to see. He who stands first against the darkness stands closest to its fury. If they cannot remember... then I must show them. In the name of our Master."

The creature smoothed its broad shouldered kimono, dyed with tones of darkest midnight and fresh blood. Stepping from the rocky precipice, the beast named Hakai - Death, Destruction, Annihilation - hovered out onto the darkened sky.

A swirling cloud of dark spirits followed in its wake as it journeyed to Otosan Uchi.

With Kuni Utagu's death, bloodspeakers around the Empire have begun growing bolder. The Four Winds have agreed to put aside their differences long enough to hold another tournament, to determine his successor.

Once, there was a ronin swordsmith named Tsi Xing Guo. His skill was as legendary as his fiery temper, and long ago he forged katana of the finest steel for any who would meet his price. Not long after the Battle at Oblivion's Gate, two samurai came to him with a remarkable offer; to forge weapons for the Fortunes, the Sun and the Moon. Those samurai were Lord Yakamo and Lady Hitomi, and the reward they granted Xing Guo was ascension to the Celestial Heavens as the Fortune of Steel. Xing Guo's only regret was that he left no apprentice, no heirs to his teachings. His blades were his only legacy.

Last full moon, Tsi Xing Guo was seen once more in the world of mortals, tears flowing freely from his immortal eyes. He hovered over the empty throne room of Otosan Uchi, where the Steel Throne once stood. Without speaking a word, he leaves a message for the assembled emissaries of the Clans, "In this time of strife, it is time for us to come together, like the folding of steel, once together we become stronger. I shall take the finest smith among you to the Celestial Forge, to make a blade unmatched in history in the name of a Great Kami. This blade shall be your gift to another so we might come together and bring peace to the Empire. That very day the message spread across the land as swift Miya courtiers carried the news to the daimyo of all the clans.

But other ears heard the Master Smith's message as well. The creatures of the Shadowlands, servants of darkness and corruption, look upon the opportunity with eagerness. Xing Guo made his offer "in the name of a Great Kami..."

He never excluded Fu Leng.

With the coming of winter, the snows settle heavily across the fields of Rokugan. Even the great roads of the Lion provinces become choked with mud. Only a fool would dare set out upon a prolonged journey, much less attempt to field an army. Wintertime in the Empire has been, traditionally, a time of peace. Things are no different today. The starving armies of the Dragon prepare to build their camps at the edge of Phoenix territory, determined to eke out what sustenance they can before the frost sets in. The armies of the Crab and Crane shall soon retreat to their battle lines, glaring at one another behind sharpened stakes and well-manned fortifications. Winter will be a time of peace, but it is a false peace. Behind the walls even greater destructive magics and engines of war shall be constructed to be unleashed with the coming of spring.

The new year shall be a bloody one.

Or will it?

Sensing chaos on the horizon, the Four Winds have determined to do what they can to prevent it. Even the most selfish and ambitious among them does not wish to see the Empire destroyed. For the sake of peace they have agreed to make one final effort to choose which one will succeed their father's throne. To this end, they have issued invitations to the Emperor's Winter Court, a gathering of the most influential samurai of the Empire, held in the ruling house of the clan most favored by the Imperial Family. Worthy bushi, cunning courtiers, and powerful shugenja will be gathered together under one roof beneath the flag of truce.

The location of the court has not yet been decided. The Winds themselves are unable to agree. Hantei Naseru - the Anvil - believes only Kyuden Seppun is fitting for a gathering of Toturi's children. Akodo Kaneka - the Bastard - prefers his own home, Shiro Akodo. Toturi Tsudao - the Sword - has demanded neutral ground, and wishes to meet at Kyuden Suzume, home of the Sparrow Clan. Toturi Sezaru - the Wolf - does not care where they meet, so long as they get the wretched affair over with so he can return to his own private affairs.

So the Winds have left the decision in the hands of the representatives of the Great Clans, and this is where you come in, my friend. Prove yourself worthy, and Winter Court shall be be held in the home of your daimyo. The honor of protecting the Four Winds shall fall upon your family, and their favors shall be heaped upon your house. The Steel Throne shall grace the home of your daimyo.

For a time, you shall be the heart and soul of Rokugan.

While the Winds are reluctant to directly involve themselves in the civil wars which embroil the Empire, the favors that shall be heaped upon the clan that hosts Winter Court are not inconsiderable. Consider well which Wind you shall support, for their favors shall fall upon you when you succeed.

If the Crab should win favor, the Wind you have chosen shall offer his or her support in their campaign against the Shadowlands, thus freeing Crab troops to war against the Crane.

If the Crane should win favor, the Wind you have chosen shall favor your clan in the manner that the Hantei once favored the Crane... he or she shall take a Crane spouse.

If the Dragon should win favor, the Wind you support shall gain a private audience with Togashi Hoshi, and a glimpse of the future that only a true Dragon could provide.

If the Lion should win favor, the Wind you have chosen shall appoint a Lion as Protector of Otosan Uchi, and place their own life under the protection of the Emperor's Right Hand.

If the Phoenix should win favor, the Wind of your choice shall grant your clan a powerful magic item, an heirloom of the Imperial Family as a focus for their eternal study.

If the Scorpion should win favor, they shall perform a favor for the Wind you find most favorable... a favor to be repaid in time.

If the Unicorn should win favor, the Wind you have chosen shall endorse their wish to open trade with the gaijin for a time, granting access to new opportunities for wealth and technology.

If the Ratlings should win favor, the Wind you have chosen shall acknowledge the Nezumi with new respect, and accept one of their number as his attendant.

And if the Shadowlands should triumph, the Winds fail to agree. The forces of darkness cause dissension among the descendants of Toturi. The Dark Lord's favor shall fall upon the Wind you have chosen...
